Let’s quickly namecheck one film whose campaign appears to have sadly run of steam: Sarah Polley’s Women Talking.

The powerful film, starring Rooney Mara, Jessie Buckley and Claire Foy, is deserving of the top prize.

It’s (finally) released in the UK on 10 February, and we included it in our film preview of 2023.

Yes, there’s a new Indiana Jones. But, more importantly, 2023 promises brand new work by Greta Gerwig, Martin Scorsese and Ari Aster, plus killer dolls, wedding heists, fake girlfriends and the grand return of Michael Fassbender. Jacob Stolworthy and Adam White have surveyed next year’s line-up

One surprise film that was omitted from the Bafta longlists in several of the main categories was The Fabelmans, which is an Oscar frontrunner following its victory at the Golden Globes earlier this month.

Will this hurt the biographical Steven Spielberg film’s Oscar chances? Time will most certainly tell.

It’s a good time to highlight the Rising Star nominees, who were announced earlier this week.

Let’s just say: it was a good day to be a Sex Education star.

Previous winners include James McAvoy, Eva Green, Tom Hardy, Kristen Stewart, Tom Holland and Letitia Wright.

In 2022, the award was won by Lashana Lynch.

It really seems as if Tár star Cate Blanchett is the one to beat for Best Actress this year, so a nomination would hardly be surprising. It would be her seventh (seventh!) nomination., with the first arriving in 1999 for Elizabeth.

Fierce competition, though, is expected to manifest in the form of Michelle Yeoh for Everything Everywhere All at Once.

Will Cate Blanchett receive her seventh Bafta nomination?

Acting wise, it’s being expected that Best Actor is a two=horse race between Banshees actor Colin Farrell and Brendan Fraser’s comeback performance in The Whale.

Should they get nominated today, it will be each actor’s first ever Bafta nomination.
