The Ravens have announced that Jesse Minter has been appointed their new head coach

The Baltimore Ravens have announced that Jesse Minter has been appointed their new head coach following the departure of John Harbaugh.

Harbaugh spent 18 seasons in charge of the Ravens before being fired earlier this month. He was the most successful coach in franchise history but lost his job after Baltimore failed to make the playoffs.

The Ravens interviewed 16 different candidates for the role, including ex-Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel, Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver and Bills offensive coordinator Joe Brady.

But on Thursday, it was confirmed that the top job had gone to Minter. It is a first head coaching role for the 42-year-old who most recently served as defensive coordinator of the Los Angeles Chargers.

He previously spent several years on the Ravens staff and, in a statement on Thursday, Minter said: ‘I am truly honored to serve as the head coach of the Baltimore Ravens.

‘This is an organization whose values, culture and tradition of excellence reflect everything I believe about the game of football and how it should be played. My family and I are thrilled to join the Ravens flock, and we can’t wait to make the fans, the great city of Baltimore and Maryland proud.’

His appointment was confirmed just hours after star quarterback Lamar Jackson sparked rumors that he could soon be traded to the Raiders.

Jackson is coming off a disappointing season and he sent the rumor mill into overdrive after reposting a fan’s post on social media, which showed her son wearing a Jackson jersey while holding a Las Vegas Raiders themed football.

She captioned the post: ‘Is this a good time to point out my (then) 3 year old MAY have predicted the potential move of @Lj_era8 to the Raiders?’

Between 2017 and 2020, Minter served under Harbaugh – who is now with the Giants – as a defensive assistant and defensive backs coach.

Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti said he stood out during the team’s ‘incredibly thorough interview process’ and ‘clearly understands the values, high expectations and history of the Ravens…’

‘He has a great vision for the future,’ continued Bisciotti, who backed the new head coach to ‘inspire’ Ravens players ‘to championship levels.’

General manager Eric DeCosta also heaped praise on the 42-year-old, who is only the fourth Baltimore Ravens head coach in history.

‘Jesse is a strong leader who possesses a brilliant football mind and a spirit that will resonate with our players and fanbase alike,’ DeCosta said. ‘Jesse comes from a football family, with success at every level of the sport, and we are confident that he is the right head coach to lead the Ravens forward.’
