Chiefs PA announcer Dale Carter has resigned after the team asked him to change his style

Longtime Kansas City Chiefs public address announcer Dale Carter has resigned from his role after the team asked him to change up his traditional third-down hype call.

Carter had been the voice of Arrowhead Stadium for 16 years prior to his announcement on Friday that he’d no longer be behind the mic.

He addressed his resignation in a Facebook post, saying that the team crossed his ‘red line’ and that he wouldn’t be returning.

Carter revealed that someone on a ‘high level’ within the Chiefs organization ‘had heard another PA guy at another stadium really amp it up on 3rd down and they wanted me to experiment with different calls.’

This past Tuesday, Carter says that his bosses wanted to hand over ‘3rd Down Call’ duties to another Chiefs PA announcer, Nate Herron.

‘That was my red line,’ Carter said. ‘I wish them the best of luck.’

Carter concluded: ‘I was blessed to be the Chiefs PA announcer for 16 seasons plus 1 preseason game. I never missed a game during that time (even going to London for a whirlwind 48 hours). I worked every major Fall/Winter holiday. I feel like I gave everything I had. It’s just time to close that chapter.’

In a statement to The Athletic, the Chiefs said, ‘We appreciate Dale’s dedication and professionalism as the in-stadium voice at GEHA Field at Arrowhead over the past 16 seasons.

‘We understand and respect his decision and wish him all the best moving forward.’

Carter, who also works at a local country music radio station, became known among Chiefs fans for his elongated third-down-call which whipped the 76,000 in the stadium into a frenzy.

He says that he continues to have ‘tremendous respect for the organization’ and that he was ‘thankful I got to do this’.

Carter added that his departure would allow him to focus more of his attention on his attempt to be elected to county government in Missouri.

His announced absence comes just days before the Chiefs play their home opener for the 2025 season against the Philadelphia Eagles in a re-match of Super Bowl LIX.
