Broncos head coach Sean Payton was bizarrely hit with a conduct penalty after colliding with an official – but that didn’t stop him piling more misery on the Chiefs.
Payton was on the sidelines as Denver dealt Kansas City their second successive defeat, with Wil Lutz’s late field goal sealing a 22-19 win at Empower Field.
However, the major talking point after the game was not Lutz’s heroics but, rather, the unusual scenes that unfolded between Payton and one of the NFL officials.
During the third quarter, with the score tied at 6-6, Payton stood on the white stripe of the sidelines when the down judge ran straight into him and sent them both flying.
Payton was helped up by one of the Broncos staff members, while the official got up on his own accord before throwing down the flag immediately after.
Thankfully, neither Payton nor the official were hurt from the incident, but the Denver head coach was bizarrely hit with the unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.

Unfortunately for the Chiefs, that penalty did not derail the Broncos’ spirit and, in fact, QB Bo Nix went on to lead the side to 89-yard touchdown drive shortly after
Nix combined with running back Jaleel McLaughlin on the play, with the latter taking it to the house and putting the Broncos in the driving seat in the game.
Despite a valiant effort from the visitors, which included a late flurry in the fourth quarter, the Broncos held on for their ninth win of the season.
The Chiefs thought they had perhaps clinched the win after Travis Kelce scored a touchdown late on and, in the process, made Kansas City history.
It was Kelce’s 84th touchdown for the Chiefs – the most in franchise history – having previously been tied on 83 with Kansas City legend Priest Holmes.
Kelce celebrated wildly after his score gave Andy Reid’s team a 19-16 lead with around 10 minutes left in the game.
But his night ended in disappointment after the Broncos battled back to secure a 22-19 win that takes them to 9-2 for the season.
Kelce, Mahomes and the Chiefs, meanwhile, sit third in the AFC West after falling to 5-5 for the campaign.
