I keep reading (and writing) about street takeovers in large cities like Los Angeles and St. Louis, where thugs do dangerous donuts with their tires screeching, party in the street, often ransacking the nearest convenience store. There are often numerous injuries or even deaths from idiots plowing their cars into the crowd or firing their guns.
Almost every time, the police say, “Yeah, there was nothing we could do about it, and they all scattered when we finally showed up.”
And each time I think to myself, like hell, there’s nothing you could do about it. You could trap them all in and arrest every damn one of them.
Finally, we can bring you the story of a police force that had the same thought, and masterfully outplayed a mob of as many as 100 bikers who were terrorizing the streets:
A massive “takeover” targeting the Bay Bridge was shut down before it could start, as California law enforcement blocked a surge of bicycle riders attempting to storm one of the state’s busiest commuter routes.
The California Highway Patrol’s San Francisco Area office, working with the San Francisco Police Department, identified the group as it rode recklessly through city streets and moved quickly to stop the attempt before it reached the bridge on March 28.
Authorities tracked the riders in real time as they made their way toward the San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge, eventually entering via the Harrison Street off-ramp — riding the wrong way into oncoming traffic.
Here comes the good part:
That is where officers had already positioned themselves.
Bwaa ha ha! Busted, gangstas. CHP and SFPD officers blocked the group, stopping the takeover before it reached the freeway.

Oh, and oops, they took your bikes too.
Video released by CHP shows a police helicopter overhead as officers moved in and blocked access to the bridge.
Officials said the response was deliberate and based on prior incidents, where similar groups have progressed from city streets onto the bridge.

I’ve been on the road when one of these bike riding mobs shows up (although it was nowhere near the size of this one). They weave in and out of traffic, intentionally getting as close to you as possible, and they pop wheelies and stare at you, daring you to do anything about it. It can be pretty intimidating, because what if they decide to make you part of the show?
“What we saw yesterday was not harmless fun,” said CHP San Francisco Area Captain Tim McCollister. “This is no place [the freeway] for games or risky behavior.”
Here’s one they got away with in 2023, though:
