LAKEWOOD – A car struck a school bus that was carrying students Thursday night after colliding with another vehicle on River Road, police said.

Officers responded to the accident just after 9 p.m. and found the three vehicles in the area of 978 River Avenue, Capt. Gregory Staffordsmith said.

Officials do not yet know how many students were on the bus or which school they attend, but have confirmed that none of them were injured.

Investigators on the scene determined that a Dodge Challenger was traveling south on River Avenue when it was cut off by a Ford Expedition that was attempting to turn into the parking lot of River 978 Banquet Hall, according to authorities.

After the vehicles collided, the Dodge Challenger crossed into the opposing lane and struck the school bus, officials said.

The driver of the Ford Expedition – 37-year-old Shulem Ekstein, was issued a summons for careless driving.

The driver of the Dodge Challenger was transported to a local hospital after suffering from ankle pain, police said.

Michael Inzelbuch, the lawyer for the Lakewood school board, was not immediately available for comment.
