Chelsea look set to add Reece James to their list of injured stars, after the youngster limped off in pain during Wednesday’s clash with Brighton.

James suffered a knock in the first half of the Stamford Bridge showdown and could play no further part after receiving attention from medical staff.

The England star was able to hobble from the pitch, though required assistance from coaching staff before being replaced by Marcos Alonso.

It spells concern for the Blues, who are still contending with the repercussions of Ben Chilwell being ruled out for the season.

After James was involved in the collision during the match, former Chelsea skipper Andy Townsend noted: ‘There’re a bit of contact, not a lot, but It looks really sore for him – that’s a big blow for Chelsea.

‘There was a bit of contact in the collision – he’s walking very gingerly as he walks off the field – let’s hope he’s back soon.’

The timing is tough for Chelsea, given they face title rivals Liverpool in just four days.

Speaking recently about the pile up of fixtures and the effect it has on his players, Blues boss Thomas Tuchel said: ‘The circumstances are the problem. The fixtures themselves are not the problem – because we are used to it. The players are used to it, they love to be out there and to play regularly.

‘To play all the time isn’t the problem, it’s the circumstances. It’s Covid as everyone single day someone can be out and someone can be infected.

‘So everyone is having to cope with the uncertainty. I wouldn’t call if fear but I would call it uncertainty.’

Not long after James’ exit, Chelsea were boosted by record signing Romelu Lukaku breaking the deadlock to open the scoring at 1-0.

The Belgian has now scored in consecutive matches since making his own comeback from injury, following his recent strike in a 3-1 win over Aston Villa.

Chelsea would ultimately come undone in added time however, with Danny Welbeck snatching a draw with a header in the dying moments.

WHO COULD LIKELY MISS THE CRUNCH LIVERPOOL MATCH?

Ben Chilwell

The England international suffered a knee injury in last month’s win over Juventus which Chelsea initially hoped could be treated without surgery but on Tuesday it was confirmed Chilwell will need an operation to repair his damaged anterior cruciate ligament. It is likely to sideline the defender for the remainder of the season and leaves Thomas Tuchel with a big void to fill at left wing-back.

Thiago Silva

After muscle problems impacted his 2020-21 campaign, Silva had managed to stay fit until he was forced off during Boxing Day’s victory over Aston Villa. The Brazilian’s withdrawal was put down to a hamstring injury which is unlikely to clear up before Liverpool travel to the capital this weekend and even if it does, can his manager risk the veteran centre-back with so many other absentees?

Reece James

The Chelsea academy graduate has been an integral part of the success Tuchel’s side have enjoyed in the last 12 months but also sustained what appeared to be a hamstring issue against Brighton. James, who has found the net on five occasions this season, had to be replaced in the 27th minute and is surely a doubt for Sunday’s match at Stamford Bridge.

Andreas Christensen

Christensen was the first Blues defender to struggle on Wednesday and had been primed to come off early with a back problem but was able to initially carry on. Eventually the Danish defender could not continue and was taken off at half-time to provide another headache for his manager before Liverpool visit.
