Chris Hemsworth says working on Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga was different from other movies in the action genre.
During a panel at CCXP23 in Brazil (via the omeleteve YouTube Channel), Hemsworth cited George Miller’s approach as the reason. The director adhered to very specific standards, leaving minimal room for improvisation or alternate takes. “When you do an action film, a lot of the time you’re trying different things, you’re experimenting, and you’re trying to make the sequence as impressive and as big as possible,” Hemsworth explained. “And you have backups and other options, and that can be exhausting. What was refreshing working with George is that every frame was thought out.”

Chris Hemsworth’s Furiosa Role Reignited His Creative Side
Furiosa star Chris Hemsworth raves about his experience working with director George Miller on the upcoming Mad Max: Fury Road prequel.
“Every single frame was necessary. It was servicing the whole. It was part of a grander plan and a message, so there was no waste,” Hemsworth continued. “Everything you see is essential, and means something, and supports the characters’ journey, the narrative, the overall arc of the film. It was exhausting in the best way. All of us showed up and were willing to commit and throw ourselves on the line to service this journey and this film and this franchise that has existed for 40-something years now.”
Hemsworth’s Violent and Charismatic Furiosa Villain
During the same panel, Hemsworth discussed the nature of his Furiosa character Dementus, describing him as “violent, insane, [and] brutal.” However, the actor also noted that he has a sense of “manipulative charisma.” The Thor actor continued explaining what motivates Dementus, stating that the villain only displays what he’s learned in life, which is to “kill or be killed.” Therefore, he’s learned to “rule with an iron fist.”

Why Mad Max’s Furiosa Spinoff Is So Different to Fury Road, According to Anya Taylor-Joy
Furiosa star Anya Taylor-Joy unpacks the differences between the upcoming blockbuster and its 2015 predecessor, Mad Max: Fury Road.
Along with Hemsworth as the villain, Furiosa stars Anya Taylor-Joy as a young version of the titular character initially played by Charlize Theron in 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road. The cast also includes Alyla Browne and Tom Burke. Furiosa is produced by Miller and longtime producing partner Doug Mitchell under their Kennedy Miller Mitchell banner. Although it links to Fury Road by revealing the origins of Furiosa’s character, the new film is billed as a standalone story.
Per the official synopsis, the story begins when a “young Furiosa is snatched from the Green Place of Many Mothers and falls into the hands of a great Biker Horde led by the Warlord Dementus. Sweeping through the Wasteland, they come across the Citadel presided over by The Immortan Joe. While the two Tyrants war for dominance, Furiosa must survive many trials as she puts together the means to find her way home.”
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga will hit cinemas worldwide on May 24, 2024.
