This weekend stands as the halfway point in the season, when we are supposed to get a solid read on teams, finally. So today we can look over the results and come to a conclusion: Nobody knows what they were talking about two months ago.
Being in the top-10 seems like a curse; many pre-season favorites are completely off the poll, the original second-ranked school just dropped its third loss in a row, and a basketball school has become a football powerhouse. Things are almost as unsettled as Congress during a shutdown.
All of this to say one thing: Very little is guaranteed for the postseason, with the exception being the excuse being made to find a way for Notre Dame to make the playoffs. But it also amounts to sheer fun, as any given week, we have no idea what to expect. Here is some of the mayhem we witnessed.
-
Bill Belichick may not be long for his new job in North Carolina, although he received the full endorsement of his athletic director this week. (Hilariously, he is just as word-averse in official statements as he is in press conferences.)
-
Remember when Florida State University was suing the Atlantic Coast Conference because they felt they were too good and wanted to be in the SEC? After a 2-10 season last year when they were 1-7 in the conference, they lost to Pitt, falling to 0-3 in the ACC.

Many teams had homecoming and celebrated with throwback uniforms. The laugher was Penn State – a school that plays in throwbacks – making this “radical” shift in their gear.

- The refs had a tough time of it in the Ole Miss-Washington State game. After the field judge in the secondary was buried under 8 players, a line judge was clipped by one coach and knocked into the field of play.

SMU quarterback Kevin Jennings may inspire Patrick Mahomes, as he executes an NBA-style behind-the-back forward pass.

Not quite to the level of a Mark Sanchez turnover, but a pickoff by Bowling Green was the “butt interception.”

- Navy keeps its perfect record intact when, on a 4th-and-1 in under a minute, quarterback Blake Horvath ran for a 51-yard score, and then the Midshipmen won it by deciding to go for the 2-point conversion
Some of the notable results:
Indiana 30 – Oregon 20
This was a legitimate win, on the road, as the Hoosiers bested the Ducks across the stat sheet. Indiana locked things down i the 4th quarter, and this could have been worse, except the Ducks had a pick-6 to tie the game at 20. Only the second win over a top-5 opponent in school history, the first coming against Purdue in 1967. Indiana is now ranked the highest ever at #3.
Texas 23 – Oklahoma 6
The Red River rivalry delivered another dramatic game – for a half. John Mateer made a comeback from hand surgery just over two weeks ago and was hopeful to lead the Sooners, but he was plagued by three interceptions. Arch Manning played a bit better, but still not up to his promise. He went an impressive 21/27, but only averaged 6 yards on his completions, going for just 166 yards in the air. The Longhorns relied on running back Quentrevion Wisener and defense, holding Oklahoma scoreless in the second half.
Northwestern 22 – Penn State 21
Just a stunner on many levels. This is not only the third straight loss, but the second week in a row the Nittany Lions fell when favored by more than 20 points, losing at home this time. It only gets worse. Quarterback Drew Allar is out for the season, but this loss is not blamed on that departure. He went down late in the 4th quarter as Penn State trailed. As a result, head coach James Franklin was just fired today.
Ole Miss 24 – Washington State 21
The Cougars came out hot and challenged early, but the Rebels settled down in the second half and outdueled. Quarterback Trinidad Chambliss continues to impress in his fill-in role, going 20/29 and 253 yards, throwing for two scores and running in an additional one for the day.
Alabama 27 – Missouri 24
The Crimson Tide has settled things after the early loss to FSU and is on a roll. Missouri kept things interesting enough, but Alabama put in a total team effort as it ground out lengthy drives, dominating time of possession by 18 minutes, and kept the ball away from the Tigers.
Texas A&M 34 – Florida 17
The Gators acted like they wanted to deliver another shock upset early in the game. But after going shot-for-shot in a 14-14 first quarter, D.J. Lagway cooled off as the Aggies’ defense settled in. Offensively, A&M was consistent, with Marcel Reed leading a running corps while tossing for 234 yards.
Here is the new AP Top-25 poll, filled with upheaval. Michigan, Illinois, Arizona State, Iowa State, and Florida State all dropped off, making room for USC, Urah, Cincinnati, Nebraska, and the return of the Texas Longhorns. (First place votes)
