Amid concerns of the delta variant’s ability to spread among the vaccinated, and so-called “breakthrough cases” of the illness, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has authorized third “booster” shots of the COVID-19 vaccine for individuals who may need additional protection due to existing health conditions.

On Saturday, the state Department of Health ordered all vaccination sites in New Jersey to offer booster shots to anyone with a “moderately to severely” compromised immune system, who has already received both doses of either the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna vaccines.

A second dose of the single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine is not currently recommended, according to the CDC.

Adolescents ages 12-17 should only receive a booster shot of the Pfizer vaccine, the CDC said.

Will I need a booster shot for COVID-19?

Persons who qualify for a third dose include anyone being treated for active cancer, those with uncontrolled HIV, recipients of organ or stem cell transplants, or anyone taking medications that weaken their immune systems, such as disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs such as infliximab.

A full list of qualifying conditions can be found on the CDC’s website.

The Biden Administration plans to recommended booster shots for all Americans who have received Pfizer and Moderna shots regardless of age, according to reports, but it has yet to release details.

The CDC recommends matching brands of the vaccine with your first two doses. But if the same brand is unavailable, the CDC says it is OK to take a booster shot from a different manufacturer than your first two doses.

The state Health Department said third doses should be available at any vaccination clinic. There are dozens of locations at the Jersey Shore, from hospitals such as Community Medical Center and Jersey Shore University Medical Center to retailers such as CVS and Walmart.

As of Monday, the state website said 5,303,178 residents were fully vaccinated, having received either both doses of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines, or a single dose of the Johnson & Johnson shot.

That accounts for about 57% of the state’s population, according to data from the 2020 U.S. Census.

Monmouth and Ocean counties are continuing their vaccination programs, too.
