Idaho murders suspect Bryan Kohberger will appear in court today after accepting a shock plea deal that would allow him to avoid the death penalty and spend the rest of his life in prison for the brutal killing of four college students in November 2022.
Kohberger, 30, has agreed to plead guilty to all charges in the murders of four University of Idaho students Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen and Xana Kernodle and Ethan Chapin after more than two years of fighting and legal wrangling.
The plea deal was struck in the past few days, just weeks before his trial was to begin in Boise, Idaho. He has been fighting the case for years, pleading not guilty and suggesting someone else was to blame, while delaying proceedings repeatedly.
Both the prosecution and the defense want the judge to approve Kohberger’s deal, but it has drawn mixed reactions from the victims’ families.
If the deal is accepted, Kohberger would likely be sentenced in July.
The hearing will begin at 11am MST today in the Ada County Courthouse.
