Damian Wayne Robin and Respawn

The following article contains spoilers from Robin #17, on sale now.

Damian Wayne’s solo series ended with setting up future plot points that are likely to resurface during the upcoming Batman vs. Robin series. Among the biggest questions from Robin #17 (by Joshua Williamson, Roger Cruz, Norm Rapmund, and Luis Guerrero), was the apparent revelation that Respawn, Damian’s half-brother, is alive. This of course raises the obvious question of how.

The means of resurrection aside, this may not be such a good thing. Though Damian was elated to have a biological brother, Respawn was less inclined to reciprocate those familial feelings. He blamed Damian for the suffering he endured in his childhood. In fact, the last time they saw each, Respawn tried to kill Damian. Given how turbulent their relationship has been so far, it seems unlikely that this would change now that he’s back.

Respawn is the result of Ra’s al Ghul’s cloning experiment — merging Talia and Deathstroke’s DNA. After Respawn was “born” he was endlessly tortured and used as a source of organs for Damian should any of his need replacing. Damian never knew any of this until recently, but Respawn always knew of his half-brother, and he despised him for having a better life. Tragically, any chance to reconcile was cut short by the Shadow War. Respawn was seemingly killed while trying to defend his father from bullets fired by Talia’s assassins. So, naturally, everyone is wondering how this happened.

The most likely possibility is his regenerative powers. Like Deathstroke, he can heal from almost any injury. Due to the diluted nature of his DNA though, his healing factor isn’t as strong as his father’s. However, this is still the same person who survived after having a vital organ removed and regrowing it later on. Since the exact limits of his healing abilities have not been fully addressed, he may very well have entered a deathlike coma as his body regenerated from the fatal wounds.

Then there is the possibility that this isn’t even Respawn at all, but merely an imposter who stole his costume to mess with Damian. While certainly a possibility it is far from the most likely. It’s too much trouble for one person to go through just to cause a bit of confusion. So, assuming this is Respawn, it’s likely that he isn’t happy with anyone right now.

After all, his father seems to have gone mad and his sister never really put much effort into avenging him. Add in the fact that his mother was technically responsible for “killing” him, and his already existing hatred for Damian — it’s pretty safe to assume that he doesn’t have anything positive planned. It’s likely that Respawn will want to claim his vengeance against his brother. So while Damian might be happy to see him again, that joy won’t last for long.
