The live-action adaptation of The Sword in the Stone has hit a roadblock.
For several years a planned live-action remake of The Sword in the Stone has languished in development hell. The project was first put into development in 2015, and Damsel helmer Juan Carlos Fresnadillo boarded the Disney+ film’s production as director in 2018. Since then, no major updates on the project have been shared, and the latest status update has been revealed as an unfortunate one. While speaking about the movie with Screen Rant, Fresnadillo insinuated that the film might have fizzled out after it was “put on hold” by Disney. While he also thought the remake would be a “great project,” the director also shared his doubts that the film will ever end up getting made.

Disney Unveils First Look and Plot Details for Tron: Ares
Disney has unveiled the first official look at the upcoming sequel Tron: Ares, starring Jared Leto.
“That was a project that I was attached to years ago, but it was put on hold,” Fresnadillo explained. “From this day, to be honest with you, I don’t know what’s gonna happen. I think it’s a great project and a great story that needs to be told, but I don’t know what is gonna happen. Let’s see; fingers crossed.”
On how now would be an even better time to pursue the project, given his Damsel experience, Fresnadillo added, “As you can imagine, with all these movies, you never know when it’s going to happen. I really hope that Disney greenlights the movie, but right now, I don’t know anything about it. Also, the experience that I have now after [Damsel] would be would be fantastic to apply to The Sword in the Stone, for sure.”

A Live-Action Spinoff Series Was Also Planned at Disney
Soon after it was announced in 2018 that Juan Carlos Fresnadillo would be developing a Sword in the Stone remake, it was also reported that there were plans to do more with T.A. Barron’s The Merlin Saga books. That includes a live-action spinoff with director Michael Matthews. However, this project has not had any updates since then, and like The Sword in the Stone, it seems to have been shelved, possibly forever.
The Sword in the Stone was based on the original book of the same name by T. H. White. The animated film from Disney, released in 1964, imagines King Arthur’s origin story. It follows the future King as a young boy, nicknamed “Wart,” who happens to meet the mystical wizard Merlin. With Merlin’s help, Arthur/Wart discovers that he is destined for greatness.
The original version of The Sword in the Stone is streaming on Disney+.
