Dems Visit Alligator Alcatraz, Witness Alternate Reality From What GOP Saw – RedState

Democrats were allowed to tour the illegal immigrant detainment site in the Everglades swamps of Florida known as “Alligator Alcatraz” Saturday, and naturally, they whined about the conditions. Even though the illegal alien crisis is largely of the Dems’ own making—the blame falls especially hard on the shoulders of former President “Let Them All In” Joe Biden and his incompetent sidekick, former VP Kamala Harris—they complain when anyone tries to fix the problem.

Especially triggered was the ever-aggrieved Sunshine State Rep. Debbie Wasserman-Schultz, who seemed to be surprised that the site didn’t have all the amenities of a Ritz-Carlton:

The detainees are living in cages, she fretted.

“Let’s be clear, throughout this entire tour, it was repeated over and over that the state is working hand in glove with ICE. This facility was inspected by ICE, they review their detention standards, they are using cages,” Wasserman-Schultz said. “These detainees are living in cages. The pictures that you’ve seen don’t do it justice.”

Wouldn’t almost all cells designed to hold prisoners or detainees be described as cages, Ms. Wasserman-Schultz? Just asking.

The only problem with her description? There were other witnesses, and they saw nothing of the sort.

State Sen. Blaise Ingoglia, a Republican from Florida, countered that he had seen a well-run, safe facility where the living quarters were clean and the air conditioning worked well.

“The rhetoric coming out of the Democrats does not match the reality,” said Ingoglia, who said he toured in the same group as Wasserman Schultz. Ingoglia recalled that a handful of detainees became “a little raucous” when the visitors appeared but said he didn’t make out what they were saying.

Ingoglia wasn’t alone in his assessment:

State Sen. Jay Collins said he was in another group and also found the detention center clean and well functioning: “No squalor.”

Collins, a Republican, said he noticed backup generators, a tracking system for dietary restrictions and military-style bunks with good mattresses. The sanitation devices struck him as appropriate, if basic.

“Would I want that toilet-and-sink combination at my bathroom at the house? Probably not, but this is a transitional holding facility,” Collins said by phone.

There was plenty of back-and-forth about the facility among bureaucratic officials as well:

…detainees and their relatives and advocates have told The Associated Press that conditions are awful, with worm-infested food, toilets overflowing onto floors, mosquitoes buzzing around the fenced bunks, and air conditioners that sometimes shut off in the oppressive South Florida summer heat. One man told his wife that detainees go days without getting showers.

Florida Division of Emergency Management spokesperson Stephanie Hartman called those descriptions “completely false,” saying detainees always get three meals a day, unlimited drinking water, showers and other necessities.

“The facility meets all required standards and is in good working order,” she said.

The reality is, there are few if any jails or prisons that are designed for a four-star experience. I’m sure AA is not the greatest place to stay, but nor is Rikers Island. The Democrats get their knickers in a twist over the conditions, but the reality is that what they’re really worked up about is that the Trump administration is deporting anyone at all—and reminding the American public daily what a disaster progressives created with their cruel, dangerous immigration policies over the Biden years.

Spare me your crocodile tears, Debbie.
