Did the Ultra-Rich Really Go to Bosnia to Shoot Citizens in 'Sniper Safaris?' Italy Opens Investigation – RedState

Ok, this one is weird, I have to admit.

Although there have been countless short stories and movies depicting evil folks paying big bucks to hunt unarmed citizens – think, The Most Dangerous Game by Richard Connell (1924), The Lottery by Shirley Jackson (1948), and the Stephen King-authored story the The Running Man, which was made into an Arnold Schwarzenegger cult film in 1987 – we mostly think of such scenarios as purely fictional.

It’s all good for the popcorn-eating crowd – but could it have really happened?

Italian authorities are investigating just that, as allegations surface that some of their citizens paid to hunt down hapless unarmed innocents – even children – in Bosnia-Herzegovina on “sniper safaris” during the brutal conflict there in the early 1990s.

Pretty sick stuff. We’ll have to see if it turns out to be true.

The alleged atrocities are disturbing, to say the least, according to the BBC:

The public prosecutor’s office in Milan has opened an investigation into claims that Italian citizens travelled to Bosnia-Herzegovina on “sniper safaris” during the war in the early 1990s.

Italians and others are alleged to have paid large sums to shoot at civilians in the besieged city of Sarajevo.

The Milan complaint was filed by journalist and novelist Ezio Gavazzeni, who describes a “manhunt” by “very wealthy people” with a passion for weapons who “paid to be able to kill defenceless civilians” from Serb positions in the hills around Sarajevo.

Different rates were charged to kill men, women or children, according to some reports.

Italian authorities have opened an investigation into citizens of Russia, the United States, and Italy accused of taking part in so-called “human safaris” — paid sniper shootings of civilians in Sarajevo during the Bosnian war.

According to investigators, in the 1990s wealthy foreigners paid tens of thousands of pounds to Serbian forces for the chance to fire at residents of the besieged city, including children.

The attacks took place under the command of Radovan Karadžić, later sentenced to life imprisonment by the Hague Tribunal for war crimes.

This would seem to fall under the category of, “I’m not sure I believe that,” but authorities are taking seriously the allegations by a writer who claims he has the proof:

The investigation was sparked after an Italian writer alleged he had uncovered evidence that wealthy gun enthusiasts — dubbed “sniper tourists” — would pay Bosnian Serb forces for the chance to gun down residents at random during the four-year siege of the city, the Guardian reported.

More than 10,000 were killed in Sarajevo by snipers and shelling between 1992 and 1996 during the Balkan Wars.

“There were Germans, French, English … people from all Western countries who paid large sums of money to be taken there to shoot civilians,” said Ezio Gavazzeni, the investigative writer.

The 2022 documentary film Sarajevo Safari by Slovenian director Miran Zupancic also brought awareness to the widespread rumors.

Although one British soldier described the story as an “urban myth,” there are reports that Italian prosecutors have identified a list of witnesses as they try to uncover the truth.

The atrocities that happen in war are incomprehensible to those of us who have not lived through it, and human beings have proven over and over again that they’re capable of the unthinkable. But did this really occur? It’s certainly not out of the bounds of possibility.

Hopefully, Italian authorities will soon have an answer. If these people really did that, it’s time for them to become the hunted instead of the hunters.
