DnD Players Debate Whether a DM Can Change a PC's Alignment

A Reddit thread asks if Dungeon Masters can force alignment changes — and the Dungeons & Dragons community responds with a nuanced answer.

DRSpublishing has presented Dungeons & Dragons players with a question about alignment.

A Reddit post from the company describes how the team has been discussing “the possibility of a Dungeon Master forcing a player to change their character’s alignment based on their actions in the game.” The post continues, asking, “have you encountered this situation in your own games? If so, how was it handled and what was the outcome?” Several Dungeon Masters and players have responded and most have provided a nuanced answer; as one commentator wrote, “I wouldn’t even consider it a matter of the DM changing their alignment. The player did that on their own. The DM is simply acknowledging the natural evolution of the player’s character.”

Even D&D Characters Go Through Changes

“It’s a pretty common way for DMs to remind a player of the ethics and consequences of their character’s actions. If a lawful-good character just goes around murdering people in their sleep, then they aren’t lawful-good,” another commentator explained. Similarly, a third pointed out that “alignment is usually just a descriptive title. Most times, if your DM says that your alignment has changed, that isn’t them changing your alignment, [that’s] them telling you they’ve noticed you changing your character’s alignment.”

DRSpublishing has been up to more than just putting forth interesting questions to the Dungeons & Dragons community; it has also been creating new content. The company recently posted on Reddit the details for a new holiday-themed monster: the Chocolate Fountain. With a challenge rating of six and a primary attack that involves splashing hot chocolate about, the creature presents a dangerously delicious challenge for adventures brave enough to fight it.

Moreover, DRSpublishing recently launched a Kickstarter for a brand-new Dungeons & Dragons setting called Silverplate. “In Silverplate, you’ll get to play as the food or drink of your choice while exploring a realm filled with food-based creatures and landscapes. This imaginative setting is both delicious and dangerous, with plenty of conflict and challenges to keep you on your toes,” the announcement reads.

Furthermore, there is Dungeons & Dragons content on the way from other creatives. Most notably, the second season of the animated series The Legend of Vox Machina will debut on Amazon Prime Video on Jan. 20, 2023, and will see the eclectic heroes face off against the Chroma Conclave, a destructive group of chromatic dragons. The show is based on Critical Role, a web series where a group of nerdy voice actors plays Dungeons & Dragons.
