DOJ to Send Election Monitors to CA, NJ – RedState

We tend to think of election monitors as something the developed world sends out to Third World countries, to (hopefully) fend off any would-be dictator seeking power through election shenanigans. We would like to think our own elections, here in the United States, are above and beyond that sort or thing.

The last few years have been enough to disabuse many of us of that notion. So it’s not a big surprise to see the federal Department of Justice sending election monitors to California and New Jersey, two places where there have been election issues. Five counties in California and one in New Jersey are to be under scrutiny in the upcoming 2025 election.

The Department of Justice is preparing to send federal election observers to California and New Jersey next month, targeting two Democratic states holding off-year elections following requests from state Republican parties.

The DOJ announced Friday that it is planning to monitor polling sites in Passaic County, New Jersey, and five counties in southern and central California: Los Angeles, Orange, Kern, Riverside and Fresno. The goal, according to the DOJ, is “to ensure transparency, ballot security, and compliance with federal law.”

“Transparency at the polls translates into faith in the electoral process, and this Department of Justice is committed to upholding the highest standards of election integrity,” Attorney General Pamela Bondi said in a statement to The Associated Press.

The California Republican Party took to its official X account to state its approval of the DOJ action.

The post continues:

“In recent elections, we have received reports of irregularities in these counties that we fear will undermine either the willingness of voters to participate in the election or their confidence in the announced results of the election,” wrote GOP Chairwoman @CorrinRankin.

This could have effects beyond just this year. The 2026 election in California, in particular, may be key, as there may be an issue on the ballot to require an ID to vote. This is another step towards securing elections, and could do a lot to ensure election integrity in the once-Golden state.

California has also seen the Democratic Party’s unchecked grip on the state slipping in recent years. While Democrats still have a supermajority in both houses of the state legislature, there are signs that the once-Golden state’s status as a Democrat bastion is slipping, not the least of which is the aforementioned voter ID initiative. Democrats, we might note, almost universally oppose these measures, and yet the voter ID initiative is gaining signatures quickly.

California has had a number of recent issues with ballots and the election system.

The 2025 election matters, and moving forward, the 2026 election is going to be key for a wide variety of reasons, not the least of which is that President Trump’s second-term agenda counts in large part on GOP control of the House and Senate. Likely, these five counties in California and the one in New Jersey won’t be the only places seeing federal election monitors in place. There couldn’t be a better time to take a hard look at California’s elections.
