Students who complained about a burst pipe were shocked when the landlord sought advice from his cousin who used to live there – Dominic Cummings.

The ex-chief adviser to the Prime Minister once lived in the quaint family house near the centre of Durham, student news site The Tab reports.

The home is now reportedly owned by his cousin who has recently rented out the £530-a-month property to students.

One tenant Joe lived in the house for the past year and was initially told by the previous tenants that Cummings also used to live there.

But rumour was then confirmed one evening – when a pipe burst in the basement.

After assessing the damage, the landlord informed Joe he was unable to locate the stopcock.

Joe’s says his landlord then said ‘he might have to call his cousin who was a very busy man’.

The Tab reports Joe then explained how the landlord proceeded to get Cummings on the phone.

He was apparently able to help fix the leak by explaining where the locate stopcock was.

Joe told the Tab: ‘Our landlord, not knowing where the stopcock was, informed us that he might have to call his cousin who was, ‘a very busy man’.

‘It was a pretty great student house to live in and certainly a story to tell in the future.’

Aside from temperamental pipework, Joe said the student house actually looks pretty nice.

The house boasts five massive bedrooms, a huge garden and a small basement – perfect for a sound-proof house party.

But unfortunately for the tenants, the stopcock saga was only the first in a catalogue of complaints about the property.

‘As the year went on a few cracks, quite literally, began to show,’ Joe explained.

‘Returning after Christmas I came back to find that part of the ceiling had collapsed in the kitchen, which was fairly sub-ideal.’

Dominic Cummings’ Durham links are well-documented.

Originally from the city, Boris Johnson’s former special adviser became embroiled in the infamous Barnard Castle scandal last year when he initially claimed he broke lockdown restrictions to ‘test his eyesight’.

This is not the first leak inquiry the controversial advisor has been a part of.

Cummings’ WhatsApp messages were probed by security experts and he was MI5’s main suspect in the ‘chatty rat’ leak row earlier this year.

And he sensationally blasted the government before a cross committee of MPs in May, targeting former Health Secretary Matt Hancock, Prime Minister Boris Johnson and more in his scathing review of Downing Street’s response to the pandemic.
