COLTS NECK – A driver traveling alone in a car on Route 18 early Sunday died after she went off the road, drove behind a guard rail and headed down an embankment before striking several trees, authorities said. 

She was thrown from the vehicle during the collision that ended with the car in flames, the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office said.

The driver was heading north in a 2015 Lexus IS. Colts Neck patrol officers went to the scene at 4:51 a.m. at milepost 17.6 of the state highway.

She was pronounced dead at 5:26 a.m.

No further information was released on the victim, including her name. The investigation into the crash is continuing.
