While Boris Johnson tries to bask in Team GB’s Olympic golden glory, his wife Carrie is risking a diplomatic incident with the Games’ hosts, Japan.

I hear that animal rights campaigner Carrie has lent her support to a drive by America’s former First Lady, Hillary Clinton, who is demanding that Japan ends ivory imports while staging the Olympics.

Bill Clinton‘s wife has implored the Japanese government to ban the trade ‘as the world watches the Tokyo Olympics’. Most ivory comes from elephants, which are cruelly poached to support the popular trade.

Friends of Carrie tell me she has contacted the former Secretary of State, congratulating her and endorsing the campaign.

‘She much admires Hillary Clinton,’ one tells me, adding: ‘She’s pleased that other countries may follow the UK’s example and ban the ivory trade.’

Carrie, 33, who works for Damian Aspinall’s conservation charity, has also given a small public show of support by ‘liking’ a tweet promoting the campaign.

Formerly head of communications for the Conservative Party, Carrie has been credited with pressuring the Government to pass the Ivory Act, which will ban the import and trade of ivory in this country.

Carrie has targeted Japan before, urging its government to end the ‘cruel’ and ‘barbaric’ killing of whales and dolphins.

And last month, she came under fire from the Kenyan government because the charity she works for announced plans to relocate 13 elephants to the East African country amid great fanfare.

Officials claimed that Aspinall never asked permission to send them over. However, the parties later reconciled and said it was all a misunderstanding.

A Downing Street spokesman denies that Mrs Johnson has been in touch with Hillary Clinton but confirms she ‘liked’ the tweet.

Bragg fury over developer threatening his love-nest

Having finally married his younger lover, Melvyn Bragg had hoped to live out his days in wedded bliss at the North London home he bought 42 years ago.

But his idyll has been shattered by his Hampstead neighbour announcing plans to demolish two garages and build a four-storey, six-bedroom house that would dwarf Bragg’s multi- million-pound property.

‘I believe this development would tower over my home, thereby completely changing its character and ambience for ever,’ the distinguished broadcaster says.

‘When I bought [my home], two of my priorities were light and privacy. The drawings on the website show that these two aspects would be severely affected — and these are not my only objections.’

The host of Radio 4’s In Our Time, who lives with his wife, Gabriel, adds: ‘I have consulted a heritage expert. His initial reaction was that the proposed development is ‘outrageous’.’

A spokesman for his neighbour, property investor Alon Melek, tells me: ‘We are aware of the views of the immediate neighbours and are looking at ways to ensure that we can mitigate the impact on existing homes.’

Benedict Cumberbatch made his name in Sherlock, but Gemma Chan appears to regret accepting a part in the BBC’s hit drama.

Chan, 38, best known for her roles in Humans and Crazy Rich Asians, played a stereotypical damsel in distress in one episode set in Chinatown, which critics slammed for being racially tone-deaf.

‘Would I necessarily make the same choices now?’ Chan says. ‘Maybe not. I would speak up more if I felt that a role was leaning into an orientalist trope of some sort.

‘I’m much more aware. And I’m in more of a position where I could say something.’

It’s the fashionable private members’ club where Prince Harry courted Meghan Markle, but Soho Farmhouse was the scene of a vicious brawl that ended up in court this week.

Charlie Wooldridge, a former polo-playing pal of the royals, admitted leaving a fellow reveller with a broken jaw. However, he was cleared at Oxford Crown Court of causing GBH.

The judge gave a stern warning to Wooldridge, 32, who has previous convictions for drink-driving.

‘Drink and you do not go together, as you know,’ said Recorder John Hardy QC. ‘Stay out of trouble. You’ve got two young sons. They don’t want to visit you in [HMP] Bullingdon.’

Forking out £1,310 on a pizza box might sound like an awful lot of dough, especially if there’s no pizza inside.

But Louis Vuitton, whose designer handbags are carried by the likes of American socialites Kylie and Kendall Jenner, is hoping that their loyal fashionistas will want a slice of the action.

The label has designed what it calls a ‘pizza box’ and suggests it’s ‘for transporting vinyl, music discs or accessories’.

The 14-inch square box boasts Louis Vuitton’s signature cowhide leather canvas with text reading, ‘LV SOUND DESIGN AND RECORD CLUB’ on the lid.

To complete the takeaway facade, their new reusable coffee cup is being sold for a tasty £550. I’m not sure I’ll drink to that.

Waspish theatre critic Tim Walker has optimistically invited national treasure Stephen Fry to the launch party for Star Turns, his forthcoming book about his encounters with the rich and famous.

Walker has included a chapter on Fry, who was upset by something he’d written about him.

He even quotes the multi-talented comedian and author on the back-cover blurb of the book, saying: ‘Tim Walker is a creep from the inner ring of Satan’s rectum.’

I look forward to the party, Tim, but I don’t expect to see Fry there.

Olivia’s going all herbal

Will society model Olivia Inge be quids in now that her sister, Alexia, has sold her online cosmetics business, Cult Beauty, to The Hut Group in a staggering £275 million deal?

Olivia declines to comment on whether she has shares, but says she plans to cash in on Alexia’s success by contributing to Cult Beauty’s eco section.

Olivia, 40, tells me: ‘Herbs are going to be my next thing. Now that we’ve sold Cult Beauty, and there’s actually a little money in the bank, I can afford to do something like that now.’
