England squad announcement LIVE: Thomas Tuchel confirms major recalls ahead of World Cup decision

How England Keep Getting BETTER Under Thomas Tuchel

England manager Thomas Tuchel has named Kobbie Mainoo and Harry Maguire in his latest squad, confirming recalls for the Manchester United duo for the first time since September 2024.

Announcing his squad for the upcoming friendlies against Uruguay and Japan, Tuchel has opted to name an enlarged 35-player group as his plans for this summer’s World Cup continue to take shape. Leeds striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who made the last of his 11 England appearances at Euro 2020, also returns to the national side, while there is a first call-up for Everton midfielder James Garner.

Also returning to Tuchel’s squad are Newcastle left back Lewis Hall and AC Milan centre-back Fikayo Tomori, who made his last England appearance in October 2023.

Cole Palmer has recovered from groin injury and returns with Jude Bellingham, Morgan Rogers, Eberechi Eze, Phil Foden all selected. But there is no room for Trent Alexander-Arnold, despite the injury to Reece James, or Morgan Gibbs-White.

England will play Uruguay and Japan at Wembley this month in their final two friendlies before Tuchel announces his World Cup squad, so time is running out for players to make their case for inclusion. Follow all the latest from England’s squad announcement, below

Two new goalkeepers in England squad

Thomas Tuchel has named five goalkeepers in his enlarged squad, including Aaron Ramsdale ahead of Newcastle team-mate Nick Pope and, surprisingly, Brighton’s Jason Steele.

Steele has not played a single Premier League game for Brighton this season, as he is the No 2 behind Bart Verbruggen, with all of his five appearances either coming in the Carabao Cup or FA Cup.

A first England call-up for James Garner

James Garner is the latest new face to be brought into the England squad by Thomas Tuchel. The 25-year-old Everton midfielder, who has started all 30 matches for the Toffees this season across multiple positions, takes the place of Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, who was called up in November but did not make his senior debut.

A sensational England return for Dominic Calvert-Lewin!

Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s last England appearance came in the Euro 2020 quarter-final win against Ukraine, five years ago!

But the Leeds striker is rewarded for his excellent Premier League form, where he is the top scoring English player in the top-flight alongside Danny Welbeck.

He will have the opportunity to add to his 11 caps against Uruguay and Japan, even if Harry Kane remains the undisputed first choice.

Kobbie Mainoo returns to England squad

A first call-up under Thomas Tuchel for Kobbie Mainoo, who is rewarded for his form for Manchester United by returning to the national team for the first time since September 2024.

Mainoo, who has played just once for England since starting the Euro 2024 final, was told by Tuchel that he needed minutes – and the sacking of Ruben Amorim and arrival of Michael Carrick has led to that.

BREAKING! England squad confirmed as Thomas Tuchel names enlarged 35-player group

It’s an enlarged 35-player squad. There is no room for Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Nico O’Reilly to take control of left-back position?

Nico O’Reilly has enjoyed an impressive season for Manchester City with performances at left back and in midfield, and was capped by Thomas Tuchel during the World Cup qualifiers.

There is not a standout candidate to play on the left side of the defence, with Lewis Hall, Djed Spence, Luke Shaw and Tino Livramento all possible contenders too. Myles Lewis-Skelly has not played enough for Arsenal.

Palmer, Eze, Foden, Gibbs-White? Who joins Rogers and Bellingham at No 10?

While Cole Palmer has struggled to hit top form during a difficult campaign at Chelsea, Phil Foden looked like a dead cert when he was purring for Manchester City in the middle of winter, but he is another who currently looks a little off his brilliant best.

On the flip side Eberechi Eze is flourishing at Arsenal and in qualifying he was the only player aside from Kane to score more than once.

Of the No 10s, Morgan Gibbs-White, who made two appearances off the bench in qualifying, appears the most likely to miss the squad entirely.

Walker retirement and James injury opens up right back question

With Reece James out, is essential that Thomas Tuchel finds a plan B for the summer. Tino Livramento looks the favourite to step-in, though has just returned himself after two months with a hamstring complaint. His assuredness and solidity make him a reliable deputy – that is, if he isn’t needed at left-back.

Different options are available, though. Trent Alexander-Arnold has played just 26 minutes under Tuchel but looks to be peaking at just the right time and has impressed in the last month at Real Madrid. Surely the ex-Liverpool man, with his wondrous passing ability, receives a call-up?

Other candidates come with caveats: Djed Spence has played under Tuchel but has been positioned at left-back for Tottenham, amidst their horrid run in 2026. Jarrell Quansah (played at RB in Albania in November) and Ezri Konsa (played at RB against Wales in October) are centre-backs by trade but have not looked out of place on the right-side. Their versatility should see them make the squad.

Everton’s James Garner next in line for first England call-up?

Elsewhere in midfield, Bournemouth’s Alex Scott was a surprise first-time call-up in November, but did not win his first cap. Could there be room for one of James Garner or Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, both of whom are in form for Everton?

Garner’s versatility – he has also played a right back for David Moyes this season – have give him the edge over his Everton team-mate.
