Erin Patterson’s ex-husband denies she asked about his parents’ health as they were dying

Erin Patterson’s estranged husband has denied his former wife asked about the health of his parents as they were dying in hospital.

Simon Patterson told a jury on Monday he visited his parents Don and Gail in hospital two days after they were allegedly poisoned by mushrooms in a meal prepared by Erin.

Mr Patterson said his parents’ health was deteriorating and he was under considerable stress as he made and took numerous telephone calls on July 31, 2023.

Asked by defence barrister Colin Mandy, SC, if his estranged wife could have overheard some of his conversations, Mr Patterson said: ‘Possibly little bits.

‘I don’t know if she heard how they were going as part of those conversations.’

Mr Mandy then asked if his client had specifically asked Mr Patterson: ‘How are they going?’

‘No, I can’t recall her asking that,’ he said.

‘I would have thought that would be something that she’d be interested in asking about.’

Mr Patterson remembered at the time thinking: ‘That’s odd.’

Erin Patterson has pleaded not guilty to the murders of her former parents-in-law as well as Heather Wilkinson. She has pleaded not guilty to the attempted murder of Ms Wilkinson’s husband Ian.
