Dean Henderson has pulled out of the England squad with a hip injury and been replaced by Aaron Ramsdale, after a battle for the back-up goalkeeper shirt with Sam Johnstone.

Henderson had appeared to be Jordan Pickford’s understudy for the tournament after injury ruled out usual No 2, Burnley shot-stopper Nick Pope.

But Johnstone has impressed England goalkeeping coach Martyn Margetson since his first call-up in April and sources claim he would have been seriously considered to play ahead of Henderson at the tournament if Pickford had picked up an injury.

It will be interesting to see if Henderson reclaims his place in the England set-up for September’s World Cup qualifiers when Pope is expected to be fit.

Johnstone has just been relegated with West Brom, but West Ham and Tottenham are among the clubs keen on the 28-year-old. Ramsdale also suffered relegation, with Sheffield United.

Meanwhile, Luke Shaw has revealed he feared for his Euro 2020 place after suffering a wrist injury towards the end of the season. The Manchester United left back was on the bench for the win over Croatia on Sunday, with regular right back Kieran Trippier preferred.

Shaw has worn strapping on his left arm in recent weeks and said: ‘I’ve just ruptured the ligaments across the top of my wrist. It is not too bad — I was a little bit worried, because I thought, if it is bad then I might have to have an operation.’
