thor 4, gorr, singularity

Thor Odinson remains one of the only original Avengers to stay active in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With the Iron Man movies presumably done and Captain America shifting from Steve Rogers to Sam Wilson, the Asgardian is the strongest remaining link to Phase One. The release of Thor: Love and Thunder makes him the first MCU hero with four solo movie titles of his own, and naturally, that comes with several cameos from previous MCU movies. Most of them are from previous Thor movies, though a few have crossed over from other corners. Here’s a list of all of them, in the order that they appear in the film.

The Guardians of the Galaxy Are Thor’s Reluctant Partners

Thor departed Earth with the Guardians at the conclusion of Avengers: Endgame, though it was an imperfect fit from the start, and the Thunder God seemed destined to go his separate way before too long. The first act of Love and Thunder covers the details, as Thor’s general flakiness and inability to reckon with his losses make him an imperfect asset at best. While the Guardians indulge him, they’re happy to leave him behind once Gorr’s rampage begins. The MCU will presumably pick up their trail in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Darcy Lewis Is Still Jane Foster’s Bestie

Grad-student-turned-physicist Darcy Lewis was a staple of the first two Thor movies before playing a surprisingly significant role in the events of WandaVision. She served as a consultant for S.W.O.R.D. during that series, though her association appeared to be informal. It presumably remains in Love and Thunder, though it isn’t touched upon in the film. She appears early on while Jane is undergoing chemotherapy, serving as comfort and support for her friend.

Erik Selvig Helps Jane Seek a Cure

Selvig is another of Thor’s oldest Terran friends, having befriended the Thunder God during his exile on Earth in the original Thor and inadvertently assisted the Chitauri invasion under Loki’s influence during the original Avengers. He remains a steady, if somewhat eccentric, presence in the MCU, relegated to an institution during Thor: The Dark World and aiding Thor with his prophetic vision in Avengers: Age of Ultron. He’s seen briefly on a computer screen in Love and Thunder, remotely helping Jane seek a cure for her cancer.

Miek Is King Valkyrie’s Assistant in New Asgard

Miek is Korg’s longtime friend, introduced as one of the Grandmaster’s gladiators in Thor: Ragnarok. She’s a Sakaaran, an insect-like species who have cropped up as random minions in both Thor: The Dark World and the first Guardians of the Galaxy. Her physical body is small and harmless, but she has traditionally utilized a mechanical exoskeleton — complete with bladed limbs — that make her a formidable combatant. Her friend Korg initially misidentified her gender as male until she produced a clutch of eggs on the spot. Love and Thunder finds her still in New Asgard, serving as King Valkyrie’s administrative assistant.

The Asgardian Players Survived the Events of Avengers: Infinity War

Asgard fell during the events of Ragnarok, and Thanos’ attack on the survivors at the beginning of Avengers: Infinity War took an even deeper toll on the remaining Asgardians. Survivors apparently included the acting troupe whom Loki tasked with producing a bowdlerized stage version of his death in Ragnarok. They have settled in New Asgard like the rest of their kin, and Love and Thunder depicts them performing a new play for the tourists, covering the events of Ragnarok and introducing a new faux Hela played by Melissa McCarthy. They also appear at the meeting following Gorr’s attack on New Asgard, claiming that “people need entertainment” during a crisis.

Darryl Jacobson Was Thor’s Roommate in a Trio of MCU Shorts

Darryl is an Australian who memorably played the straight man in three MCU short films directed by Taika Waititi: Team Thor Parts 1 and 2 and Team Darryl. They depict Thor’s brief life around the time of Captain America: Civil War as an ordinary guy, adopting the habits of a Terran mortal and taking an apartment with Darryl as his long-suffering roommate. Thor was replaced by the Grandmaster in Team Darryl, forcing the hapless Australian to perform all kinds of menial tasks for him. Love and Thunder finds Darryl working as a tour guide in New Asgard, with a special focus on the pieces of Thor’s hammer. His inability to lift Mjolnir made household tasks an unnecessary challenge but apparently left him with a good working expertise on the weapon.

Lady Sif Is Another Confirmed Survivor of Ragnarok

Sif was a robust part of Odin’s court at the end of The Dark World, delivering the Aether to the Collector and assisting SHIELD for two episodes of Agents of SHIELD in its first and second seasons. She vanished from the canon MCU shortly thereafter for off-camera reasons: Actor Jaimie Alexander took the lead role in the series Blindspot and could not commit to further appearances as Sif. With Blindspot ending its five-season run in 2020, Alexander has made sporadic returns to the MCU, including voice work in two episodes of What If…? and a simulacrum in Loki, Season 1, Episode 4, “The Nexus Event.” She makes a brief cameo in Love and Thunder as Thor rescues her from the aftermath of one of Gorr’s attacks and reappears at the end training Axl, suggesting that she has a future role to play in the MCU.

Arishem The Judge Apparently Hangs Out in Omnipotence City

Two Celestials appeared briefly in the Love and Thunder theatrical trailer, one of whom may be Arishem the Judge, while the other appears to be Ziran the Tester. They pop up outside the great hall in Omnipotence City, watching as Thor and his companions depart via their goat-drawn ship. The shot in the trailer is the only depiction of Arishem in the film, but he appeared previously in Eternals, which ended on a prominent cliffhanger featuring the deity. Whether that ties into his appearance in Love and Thunder — and indeed what he’s doing in Omnipotence City besides making a cameo — has yet to be seen.

Heimdall Feasts in the Halls of Valhalla

Heimdall, the Guardian of the Bifrost Bridge, survived the events of Ragnarok, only to be murdered by Thanos at the beginning of Infinity War. Just before dying, he sent the Hulk to Earth: A valiant final act that allowed the heroes of Earth time to prepare for Thanos’ arrival and eventually undo The Snap. Love and Thunder reveals his final rewards in a post-credits scene, as he welcomes Jane Foster to Valhalla.

To see all of these cameos, Thor: Love and Thunder is currently playing in theaters.
