EXCLUSIVE: Jack Dylan Grazer Says Black Adam Is the Key to Shazam's Return

Shazam! star Jack Dylan Grazer isn’t counting on a third film happening, but he still thinks there’s a way to get the character into the DCU.

After playing Freddy Freeman in 2019’s Shazam!, Jack Dylan Grazer returned for the 2023 sequel, Shazam! Fury of the Gods. The sequel came up short at the box office, seemingly making it far less likely that a third installment would be made. Recently speaking with CBR’s Kevin Polowy at WonderCon, Grazer commented on the potential future of the Shazam! movie series, figuring that it “probably” won’t happen due to Fury of the Gods underperforming. However, the actor also believes that Black Adam would be the key to continuing the Shazam! story, if it ever happens.

Black Adam’s Shazam Connection, Explained

Warner Bros. and DC’s Black Adam sparks a deep-rooted connection with Billy Batson/Shazam and Dwayne Johnson’s lead role. Here’s what we know.

“I don’t know, man. I don’t want to steal the thunder from [my new series] Spiderwick [Chronicles], but I will say probably not,” Grazer said when asked if Shazam! 3 would happen. “I don’t know if there was an article that [director] David Sandberg posted, he said, ‘I will never make another superhero movie again.’ Because I guess Shazam! 2 tanked. I liked it. I thought it was a good movie. I liked it, but box office was like, ‘Suck this.’ Whatever.”

Grazer added, “If it happens, it happens, and I think that if it does happen — and who’s to say that my word has any authority — but if it does happen, it will probably be from a Black Adam thing. Black Adam will invite Shazam into that world.”

How Shazam! Fury Of The Gods’ Daughters Of Atlas Connect To Greek Mythology

Shazam! Fury of the Gods introduces a trio of antagonists in the Daughters of Atlas, who are characters heavily inspired by Greek Mythology.

Grazer referred to media coverage of director David F. Sandberg responding to Shazam! Fury of the Gods coming up short at the box office. At the time, Sandberg hinted on X (then Twitter) that he was “done with superheroes,” teasing that he was looking to try “some new things.” The filmmaker also said he was “looking forward to… disconnecting from the superhero discourse online.” The director moving on, Shazam! Fury of the Gods underperforming, and the DCEU having since ended are all signs that the Shazam! story has come to an end.
