Fans have reveled in the ‘perfection’ of Burnley‘s ‘glorious’ line-up against Liverpool which saw players with the numbers 1-11 picked to play at Anfield on Saturday.

Clarets boss Dyche, renowned for his no-nonsense, no-frills approach and simple but effective style of play lined up his team in a traditional 4-4-2 formation, as usual.

And Burnley have become the first Premier League team to line up in numerical order for more than two decades, with supporters of all colours and football purists alike taking to social media to express their joy at the old-school starting side.

Dyche’s team of Nick Pope, Matt Lowton, James Tarkowski, Ben Mee, Charlie Taylor, Johann Gudmundsson, Josh Brownhill, Jack Cork, Dwight McNeil, Chris Wood and Ashley Barnes are the first such side in 23 years.

Alan Curbishley’s Charlton were the most recent Premier League side to do so, in August 1998.

Curbishley’s Addicks lined up with Sasa Ilic, Richard Rufus, Eddie Youds, Chris Powell, Danny Mills, Mark Kinsella, Neil Redfearn, Shaun Newton, John Robinson, Andy Hunt and Clive Mendonca and beat Southampton 5-0, last millennium.

Burnley themselves last did it in the Championship on 14 September 2004, with a 0-0 draw against Wigan under boss Steve Cotterill.

They lined up with Danny Coyne, Lee Roche, Mo Camara, John McGreal, Frank Sinclair, Michael Duff, Richard Chaplow, Robbie Blake, Graham Branch, Ian Moore and Tony Grant.

And present-day fans quickly took to Twitter to react.

One fan said: ‘Sean Dyche going old school and starting squad numbers 1-11 in starting line up,’ followed by a clapping emoji, with another adding: ‘The numbers and positions,’ with a heart-eye emoji.

A third simply stated: ‘Proper stuff,’ while another added: ‘That’s so satisfying mate!’ and a fifth tweeting: ‘Oh my they’ve only gone and done it.’

Another supporter said: ‘A thing of absolute beauty’.

More added to the debate, with one fan continuing: ‘All numbers are spot on this is football ladies and gentlemen,’ with another adding: One to Eleven. 4 and 8 in midfield. 442. Burnley, I love you’.

Another tweeted a picture of actor Michael Fassbender in the film X-Men saying: ‘Perfection’.

A fourth punter tweeted: ‘Burnley name their starting team consisting of players wearing the numbers 1-11. All also playing in the traditional positions for the numbers. Glorious’.
