Final Fantasy VII is one of the most iconic JRPGs of all time, but its legacy is a massive, timeline-jumping epic that can be hard to keep up with.

“On January 9th, players will be able to check out a brand new Limited Time Mode Takeover in Apex Legends, featuring the Buster Sword R2R5 and Materia hop ups, along with a range of new FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH inspired cosmetic items including new Legendary and Epic skins, stickers, emotes, and more,” the press release states. “For three weeks of infinite possibilities, the FINAL FANTASY VII Takeover will replace the unranked battle royale mode in Apex Legends. In this exciting new mode, players can wield the Buster Sword R2R5 to dash, block bullets, unleash a powerful Limit Break, and more.”

The press release continues: “New effects join the game in the form of Materia Hop-Ups, which grant benefits like area-of-effect (AOE) lightning and HP Absorption, plus a SOLDIER Nessie to fight by players’ sides. But players won’t just be embracing gameplay inspired by FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH, they’ll be looking the part too! New skins come to the Outlands, including a moogle inspired skin for Wattson, along with iconic skins for Wraith, Crypto, and more. These skins can be bought with Apex Coins, and are part of 36 limited-time FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH-themed cosmetics. Players can collect them by purchasing Event packs to obtain items from the knockout pool, including the Mythic Buster Sword R5, the first Mythic cosmetic that can be equipped by any Legend!”

Final Fantasy VII Remake meets the real world on a nautical nighttime cruise excursion

The collaboration between Final Fantasy VII and Apex Legend was initially teased during last year’s The Game Awards show, where the Final Fantasy VII Rebirth theme song — “No Promises to Keep” by series composer Nobuo Uematsu — was performed live on stage by Loren Allred. Rebirth is the sequel to Final Fantasy VII Remake, the long-awaited 2020 remake of the classic PlayStation role-playing game. While the remake kept many memorable moments from the original release, such as Cloud Strife’s dress-up scene, it also made significant changes to the overall storyline. This leads fans to wonder if Final Fantasy VII Rebirth will possibly rewrite the game’s most tragic, yet, iconic scene.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth will be released on the PlayStation 5 on Feb. 29. Apex Legends is available on PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch and PC.
