Five-month-old baby is rushed to hospital after ‘dog attack’: Animal is seized by police

A five-month-old baby was rushed to hospital after being viciously mauled in a dog attack.

Police and paramedics from the Welsh Ambulance Service were called to an address in Penyrheol, Caerphilly, at around 9.10am on Saturday. 

The baby suffered non-life-threatening injuries and the dog was seized by Gwent Police following the attack.   

No other animals were involved and police have not released the breed of dog.

The baby was rushed to the University of Wales Hospital in Cardiff and police remained in the area to carry out further investigations.

A Welsh Ambulance Service spokesman said: ‘One patient was transferred to University of Wales Hospital in Cardiff for further treatment.’

Gwent Police Chief Inspector Laura Bartley said: ‘Officers will be making further enquiries at this time and will remain at the scene as the investigation progresses.

‘It is possible that you may see ongoing police activity in Caerphilly as part of this work but please do not be alarmed.

‘If you have concerns or information then please do stop and talk with us.’

This is not the first dog attack in the area. 

In November 2021 Jack Lis, 10, was brutally savaged by an eight-stone hound and Shirley Patrick, an 83-year-old retired nurse died after suffering life-threatening injuries in a dog attack last December.
