Sziget festival kicks off in Budapest

Budapest is getting a whole lot hotter with the week-long Sziget festival, one of Europe’s largest outdoor music bonanzas. More than 500 concerts are planned, with top international acts like Florence and The Machine, Limp Bizkit, and Fauve.

Limp Bizkit postponed their Aug. 6 concert at the Stone Pony Summer Stage in Asbury Park an hour before the show with no comment.

Now, frontman Fred Durst lays the blame for the no show on a “flawed” concert industry, according to Billboard.

“In short, the system is still very flawed,” Durst said. “Even if the performers, crews, staff and promoters do their best to ensure safety on and behind the stage, that doesn’t ensure the safety of the audience as a whole.”

Limp Bizkit subsequently canceled the rest of their club and theater “Limited Last Minute Post Pandemic Popup Party” tour on Aug. 7. They also denied that band guitarist Wes Borland tested positive for COVID-19 in a social media post.

“We are all in this together, and we all — individually and as a whole — have to make our best efforts to be as responsible and proactive as possible moving forward to combat and stop spreading COVID,” said Durst to Billboard.

He added that there wasn’t a specific incident that caused the tour cancelation, but it was “just perception.”

The band had performed a soundcheck on the Summer Stage on Aug. 6, according to social media posts. Mario Karanikolos of Fairview waited with a small group of fans on Kingsley Street near the band’s tour buses in the hopes of speaking with band  members around 10 p.m. on Aug. 6.

“I’m a little disappointed but I know it’s not the band’s fault,” said Karanikolos of the Pony no show. “I had tickets. It was supposed to start at 6. I got here at 6:10 and when we got to the doors it said it was postponed. There was a sign up.”

A rep from the Pony stated on Aug. 7 that the status of the Aug. 6 show is “postponed,” not canceled as is the rest of the tour. Reps from the Stone Pony and Live Nation, the promoter of the Summer Stage shows, did not reply to a request for comment on the Durst Billboard article.

A number of shows, festivals and events have been canceled in the area and beyond as the Delta COVID variant has spread. Counting Crows canceled a concert in Boston on Aug. 7, and Lynyrd Skynyrd recently canceled four concerts as band member Rickey Medlocke tested positive for COVID.

The Lynyrd Skynyrd shows Aug. 22 at the big Barefoot Country Music Fest in Wildwood and Aug. 27 at the PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel are still on as scheduled.

The Crawfish Fest, featuring Tab Benoit, Samantha Fish and more Aug. 27 to 29  at the Sussex County Fairgrounds in Augusta, has been postponed to June 3 to 5, 2022. BravoCon, which features reality TV stars, was scheduled to take place Oct. 15 to 17 in New York City, but has also been postponed.

The Fest for Beatles Fans has once again been postponed. It will now take place in April 2022 at the Hyatt Regency in Jersey City.
