The girls basketball coach at a Massachusetts high school is charged with raping a student after an alleged off-campus incident involving alcohol.

Scott Marino, 54, of Stoneham was arrested Wednesday and is charged with two counts of rape, one count of indecent assault and battery, and one count of furnishing alcohol to a person under the age of 21.

He is accused of providing alcohol to an 18-year-old student and sexually assaulting that individual, according to Middlesex District Attorney Marian Rya, who said the alleged victim was known to Marino.

Marino is now scheduled to be arraigned Thursday in Woburn District Court.

Superintendent Timothy Sippel told local media that Marino teaches at Linden STEAM Academy, which includes kindergarten through eighth grade classes. He is also the head coach of the girls basketball team at Malden High School in Boston’s northern suburbs.

Marino has been placed on leave as he awaits trial.

‘The district is fully cooperating with relevant law enforcement agencies in their investigation, which is ongoing,’ Sippel wrote in a statement.

‘I understand how upsetting and distressing this is to our community, given the serious nature of these allegations. We thank you for your continued commitment to our students and our district community. The safety of our students and staff is our highest priority.’

A NewsCenter 5 reporter attempted to contact Marino at the home he reportedly shares with his wife, but the woman who answered the door shut off the lights outside the home and returned inside.

An attorney for Marino has not been identified publicly.

Marino has been coaching in Malden for about a decade, according to a 2017 profile in the school paper.
