As you’re surely aware, COVID-19 vaccination mandates are on the rise.

In the end, how far a reach will they have found?

Perhaps the recent case of a conflicted 21-year-old offers a clue.

But firstly, you’re no doubt aware of New York’s recent move where Pfizer, Moderna, and Johnson & Johnson’s COVID concoctions are concerned.

As covered by my colleague Nick Arama, newly-christened Gov. Kathy Hochul announced that heathcare workers who forego the vaccine will be fired.

From September 27th’s article:

Hochul said that she would invoke a state of emergency to be able to call in the National Guard to replace the fired workers which might run into the thousands.

Today, she made good on that threat. “We’ll be nation-leading,” she called it. That’s one word for it. I can think of a lot of other terms to call it but my mother didn’t like me to use those words when I was growing up.

In California last week, Gov. Gavin Newsom issued a mandate for both public and private schools.

And last month, RedState’s Jennifer Van Laar broke a story affecting millions in LA County:

That covers healthcare, schools, and large gatherings.

How radically regulated will we be, for our own good?

Consider a recent incident across the sea.

It isn’t an American story, but I believe it’s not too distant from one.

And it resides in an extremely extracurricular realm.

As reported by the New York Post, “Miss World Netherlands has pulled out of the beauty pageant final in December to avoid having to get a COVID-19 vaccine.”

On Tuesday, 21-year-old Dilay Willemstein explained via Instagram:

“I would like to inform you that I will no longer represent the Netherlands in Puerto Rico, on the big Miss World stage. This is partly due to the vaccination obligation, personally I am not ready for this yet.

“This means that the runner up (the one who got placed second in the National final) will represent the Netherlands in Puerto Rico.”

To be clear, I would never suggest anyone avoid the vaccination.

As for the issue of a mandate strictly speaking, what factors might’ve affected pageant officials’ decision?

Are beauty contestants at inordinate risk of harm from COVID-19?

They’re not particularly advanced in age — a noted factor in vulnerability to the virus.

According to the CDC — before any vaccine was available — American survivability scored thusly:

  • 0-19 years: 99.99997%
  • 20-49 years: 99.9998%

COVID can, of course, be deadly due to comorbidities.

One most prominent is morbid obesity — not likely to be found among national pageant winners.

Regardless, where ramping requirements are concerned, this is where we are — in a global sense.

Of course, Puerto Rico and the Netherlands aren’t America.

But I suspect Dilay’s situation indicates things to come.

And I believe it’s notable — not because beauty pageants are of great importance, but because they’re not.

With all due respect to those who adore and indulge in such exhibitions, nothing more superfluous comes to mind.

Domestically, I doubt we’re far away from a preventative poke standing between any would-be wearer of a crown and eternal glory.

To reference a song from the 80’s, one way or another, a vaccine mandate may find you — even in such a societal nook or cranny as a pageant.

We’re living in unprecedented times.

And the government wants to help — by convincing everyone to acquiesce.

Even so, for many Americans, the freedom to make personal medical decisions…is still a thing of beauty.
