Godzilla Minus One is so reminiscent of the original Toho movies that it’s soon heading back to the big screen with a classic black-and-white look.
On the social media platform X, a teaser trailer was shared for the monochrome version of Godzilla Minus One without color. Per Toho, it was also announced that the new release has a slightly different title, referred to as Godzilla-1.0/C (Godzilla Minus One/Minus Color). The new release will be heading to Japanese theaters on Friday, Jan. 12, 2024. Filmgoers who see the movie will also be given a “70th Anniversary Original Art Board” with both Japanese and North American visuals, though they’ll be limited to 300,000. It isn’t yet clear when this version of Godzilla Minus One will be heading to domestic theaters, but it’s very likely to screen in the United States and Canada as well, given the original version’s impressive box office success.

In the United States, Godzilla Minus One debuted with $11 million, which broke the country’s record for the best opening weekend for a live-action Japanese movie. It also had the best opening for a foreign film in 2023. Recently, the film had climbed to become the sixth highest-grossing Japanese film in the history of the United States box office. That followed the movie scoring big profits with its theatrical run in Japan.
Along with high returns at the box office, Godzilla Minus One has been widely acclaimed. It’s a finalist for Best Visual Effects at the Academy Awards in 2024, so there’s a good chance it might win an Oscar. Writer-director Takashi Yamazaki has also won Best Director for the movie at the Hochi Film Awards, where Godzilla Minus One scored an additional three nominations. Critics and audiences are both in agreement that the movie is pretty much perfect on Rotten Tomatoes, as both the Tomatometer and audience scores are tied at 98% fresh.

Godzilla Minus One has revitalized the monster’s narrative potential, and other kaiju could be similarly reimagined through their own reboots.
Will Godzilla Minus One Get a Sequel?
Considering the success of the movie, there also seems to be a good chance that Godzilla Minus One might get a follow-up film. Yamazaki has shared how it was always his dream to make a Godzilla movie, and now that he’s accomplished that, he’s letting it known that he’s hopeful to get to do at least one more.
“I had always wanted to create a Godzilla work, so the moment [is] a 50-year dream came true,” the director said, per Sanspo. “I playfully but earnestly hope I can make about one more.”
Godzilla Minus One/Minus Color will premiere in Japanese theaters on Jan. 12, 2024. A domestic release date hasn’t been announced at this time, but the full-color version is currently playing in U.S. theaters.
