Back in mid-February, it was reported that the Republican candidate for the District 1 seat on the Mecklenburg County Commission had been the victim of what was described in police reports as a drive-by shooting at his home in Huntersville, North Carolina, which is right next door to Charlotte.
The candidate, Aaron Marin, had been at home at the time along with his wife and children when the shots were fired. Thankfully, no one was hurt, but the Huntersville Police Department indicated that there were “shell casings all over his driveway,” and that “a tree, his cars, a mailbox, and a basketball court” had been hit by the gunfire.
Marin told local news outlet WSOC-TV that it was a mystery why his home had been targeted, and that they no longer felt safe being outside their own home:
“This is happening in our community in Huntersville in what appears to be a safe neighborhood,” Marin said. “Today, I don’t feel safe to stand right here in front of you on this street. My kids don’t feel safe. We don’t feel safe to play in our driveway anymore. It is disturbing what we have experienced.”
Republican Aaron Marin, who is running for the District 1 seat, said that around 7:45 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 16, shots were fired toward his home along Greenfarm Road in Huntersville.

Soon after, we learned that detectives were working off the theory that this wasn’t random, that Marin was specifically targeted, pointing to the fact that he was a candidate for public office. Though frightened, Marin vowed to stay in the race:
Detectives say the incident was targeted, noting that Marin is a candidate in a local political race.
“The FBI is now involved in this case and we’re letting them do their job so we can understand clearly where this is coming from,” Marin said.

Marin said he’s not deterred from the incident outside his home and his campaign will continue.
In an update to this story, Marin announced Wednesday that he was withdrawing from the race as his family had to move to another district because they felt unsafe, considering the case remained unresolved:
“Under different circumstances, I would have remained committed to this role, and I look forward to serving my community in the future. We are now living displaced, in fear, and under constant stress. Our children are carrying emotional trauma that continues to deepen with each passing day without answers or accountability,” he said.

In his latest statement Wednesday, Marin said “there has still been no arrest, no resolution, and no clear timeline for accountability.”
“Through this process, we have uncovered serious concerns about public safety infrastructure in Huntersville. Major streets, commercial areas, and high-traffic zones lack adequate surveillance. In many cases, there are no cameras at all—or the cameras that do exist are too low in quality to be effective,” Marin said. “This is not a minor issue—it is a critical gap that directly impacts investigations and delays justice.”

The MeckGOP has weighed in, calling what happened a targeted act of intimidation. They focused on the fact that law and order needed to be restored in the county. They also shared that there is a process for possibly getting another Republican candidate on the ballot for the general election that they will look into:

Marin faced no Republican opponents in the primary, and was set to face the Democrat candidate, Morris “Mac” McAdoo, who won a three-candidate primary in March for the seat currently held by another Democrat, Elaine Powell, who is not running for reelection. Marin ran against her in 2024 but lost.
There are conservatives in North Carolina who are upset that the shooting at Marin’s home didn’t get any national media coverage. But I think the much bigger issue/question is why, six weeks later and with all the evidence found at the scene – and with the FBI involved, the case remains unsolved.
Assuming this was, as law enforcement suggests, a targeted attack rather than a random one, was there a political motivation behind it? For background, over the last several election cycles, Republicans haven’t had a lot of luck winning a single seat on the Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners (elections are held every two years). Democrat County Commissioner Powell has held the District 1 seat since late 2018.
So it doesn’t make a lot of sense that Marin would be a political target with that in mind. Then again, we’ve seen a lot of violence against Republicans in recent years, including the 2017 targeting of the GOP congressional baseball practice, the attempts on Donald Trump’s life, and the assassination of Charlie Kirk. So I wouldn’t put it past a deranged leftist to target Marin specifically.
Or was there some other motive outside of politics? Because the FBI and Huntersville police aren’t saying anything, those questions, for now at least, remain unanswered.
Editor’s Note: The 2026 Midterms will determine the fate of President Trump’s America First agenda. Republicans must maintain control of both chambers of Congress.
