Turns out they’re also not great at baseball.
Wednesday was the annual Congressional Baseball Game between the Republicans and the Democrats at Nationals Park. Let’s hope it’s a foreshadowing of how the midterms will go, because it did not go well for the Democrats at all.

Republicans had good pitching from Rep. Greg Steube (FL-17) and good baserunning from Sen. Eric Schmitt (R-MO), putting them far ahead by the fourth inning, 11-0.
In an appropriate metaphor for how they conduct congressional business, the Democratic fielding was horrible all night. They had a particularly awful moment when a hit to shortstop by Rep. Bill Huizenga (MI-04) in the second inning resulted in a wild throw that led to two more runs scoring for the Republicans. This was pretty bad.

Democrats made a little noise in the fourth.
Rep. Morgan McGarvey, D-Ky., answered back with a ground-rule double in the bottom of the fourth, but was thrown out at the plate. Rep. Dave Min, D-Calif., then drove in two runs on an RBI base hit to put the libs on the board.
But that was all that they would get, and they ultimately went down to yet another resounding defeat, 11-2. This is the sixth year in a row they’ve lost, so they’re clearly getting outclassed. since they haven’t won yet in this decade.
This great effort from Sen. Eric Schmitt (R-MO) had to be the play of the game, as he ran full speed to make a diving, faceplant catch in left field.

Schmitt came up with blood on his face, and he just rubbed dirt in it. You know he’s going to be proud of that catch for a long time, as well he should be. That would be a highlight reel catch even in a regular Major League game. Schmitt said he “left it all on the field,” and he was honored to be named MVP of the game.
Steube went the distance and struck out five Democrats. The senators and representatives also raised a lot of money.
The annual charity game broke both fundraising and ticket sale records before the gates had even opened, according to organizers. In total, the event raised more than $3.2 million, a sizable jump from 2025’s record-breaking sum of $2.8 million.
Funds raised from ticket sales and donations go to Congressional Sports for Charity, a foundation which supports D.C.-area nonprofits and scholarships.
The prospects are likely to get even worse for the Democrats next year, when former major leaguer Mark Teixeira replaces Rep. Chip Roy (TX-21).
