Israeli move to block Gaza flotilla sparks protests and strikes across Europe
Israeli forces have begun intercepting a flotilla of civilian boats heading towards Gaza, prompting mass protests, diplomatic pressure and threats of industrial action across several countries.
The Global Sumud Flotilla, made up of more than 40 vessels carrying some 500 passengers including parliamentarians, lawyers and climate activist Greta Thunberg, was nearing the besieged enclave when Israeli operations against it were reported.
In Italy, which had already witnessed a general strike in solidarity with the flotilla last month, thousands took to the streets again. Demonstrations swept through Rome, Milan, Turin and Genoa, while protesters in Naples and Pisa briefly occupied train platforms, halting services. In Bologna, large crowds carrying Palestinian flags and banners also gathered.
At Rome’s Termini station, hundreds of demonstrators chanting “let’s block everything” forced authorities to restrict access and shut parts of the metro.
Italian media estimated that as many as 10,000 people had joined the protest in the capital, while local television speculated about the safety of several Italian parliamentarians who were travelling with the flotilla.

Chants of “Free Palestine” echoed through the demonstrations, alongside calls for prime minister Giorgia Meloni to resign.
Italian news channels provided rolling coverage of the unrest. Two of Italy’s largest unions announced a nationwide strike for Friday in response to the developments.
“The aggression against civilian ships that were carrying Italian citizens is an extremely serious matter,” the CGIL union declared. The USB union added that it planned to blockade the port of Genoa.
