Police are pictured outside Waratah train station in Mayfield on Tuesday morning

A man’s body has been found in a stormwater train near a local train station, as police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding his death.

Police were called to the drain beside Waratah train station in Mayfield, a suburb of north-western Newcastle, early on Tuesday morning following reports of the body.

Witnesses said about a dozen officers cordoned off an area surrounding the drain as investigators worked through the morning, the Newcastle Herald reported.

A ladder was reportedly lowered into the drain beside peak hour traffic on nearby Platt Street.

It is understood train operations were not impacted by the police operation.

A NSW Police spokesperson reportedly said the man’s body was removed from the drain and has not yet been identified.

The Police Transport Command will lead an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the man’s death.

More to come.
