Two workers at a nuclear submarine shipyard have been raced to hospital after a fire broke out on site in the early hours of the morning.

Shocking footage showed smoke billowing from BAE Systems in Barrow, which is currently building a £1.6billion sub for the Royal Navy.

Emergency services rushed to the site just before 1am today after reports of the blaze.

BAE Systems said two workers had suffered smoke inhalation, and were being treated in hospital.

It is unclear what is burning on the site, which has made all but three of the UK’s nuclear submarines.

The £1.6bn HMS Agincourt is understood to be currently under construction at the site.
