'I'm Pretty Excited': Zack Snyder Reveals What He Hopes to See From James Gunn's DCU

The DCEU was first launched with a movie directed by Zack Snyder and came to an end with 2023’s Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. DC Studios will now move forward with the DCU, a new timeline established by James Gunn and Peter Safran — and Snyder is stoked.

Though Snyder has moved on from his DC work following Zack Snyder’s Justice League, his association with the DCEU has fans wondering what his thoughts are on what’s next for DC movies. While promoting his new film, Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver, Snyder was asked by CBR’s Kevin Polowy about what he wanted to see from the DCU under DC Studios’ new leadership. The Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice director noted his hopes that the characters will be “treated with reverence” while the stories will stay true to the mythology of the comic books.

“You know, I’m a pretty open book,” Snyder said. “I really feel like, you know, if the characters are treated with reverence, and mythologically correct, then I’m down. I’m in. Let’s see what happens. I’m pretty excited.”

When asked if there were any particular characters he was looking forward to seeing, Snyder added, “Well, I mean, we’re going to get Superman pretty soon, so we’ll see what that’s like.”

James Gunn and Zack Snyder Offer Each Other Support

Snyder and Gunn have history, as the former’s directorial debut film, Dawn of the Dead, was written by the latter. It just so happens that both would go on to become heavily involved with forming feature films based on DC Comics characters and stories. Following the news that Gunn and Safran would be taking charge at DC Studios, Gunn had shared how Snyder had contacted him at the time to wish him well with the new endeavor.

“He contacted me to express his support about my choices. He’s a great guy,” Gunn said in an X post in February. “Again, he seems really happy with the massive world building he’s doing now.”

Gunn is referring to the universe that Snyder has helped build with the development of the Rebel Moon movies. While two films have been made (with R-rated cuts on the way), Snyder is hoping to keep the franchise going with at least another film, and his ultimate goal is for Rebel Moon to become even bigger in the future with more stories further exploring that world.

Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver premieres on Netflix on April 19, 2024.
