Several Indian planes have been shot down, and some soldiers have been taken prisoner, Pakistan officials have said, after India claimed it attacked nine militant hideouts in Pakistan.
Khawaja Muhammad Asif, the Pakistani defence minister, told Bloomberg that at least five Indian planes have been downed.“If these hostile acts are stopped… We will definitely talk to India.
We do not want this situation to escalate,” the minister said. “But if there are hostile acts initiated from the Indian side, we have to respond.”
India’s defence ministry during the early hours of Wednesday fired missiles across the border into Pakistani-administered Kashmir. It said at least nine sites were targeted “where terrorist attacks against India have been planned” in retaliation against the mass shooting of tourists in April.
Pakistan military spokesperson said at least eight civilians were killed in India’s pre-dawn airstrikes. Pakistan’s prime minister, Shehbaz Sharif, accused India of an “act of war”.
Meanwhile, the Indian army has said that three Indian civilians have been killed following military action by Pakistani troops in Indian-administered Kashmir.
India has blamed Pakistan for the Kashmir attack in which 26 men, mostly tourists, were killed, and vowed to respond. Pakistan has denied any involvement in the killings.
India’s foreign minister calls for international support
India’s foreign minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar this morning in a post on social media said: “The world must show zero tolerance for terrorism”.
His statement comes hours after India attacked Pakistan on Wednesday and Pakistan said it had shot down five Indian fighter jets in the worst fighting in more than two decades between the neighbours.

Death toll in Indian airstrike rises to eight, says Pakistan
At least eight civilians, including two children, have been killed in India’s airstrike on Pakistan, officials in Islamabad said.
A Pakistani military spokesperson said six locations in Pakistan were targeted in the pre-dawn attack.
A military official told broadcaster Geo that two mosques were among the sites hit by India.
The Pakistani defence minister told the broadcaster that all the sites were civilian and not militant camps.
He said India’s claim of targeting “camps of terrorists is false”.

UK politicians have urged restraint after India fired missiles across the border into Pakistani-controlled territory in at least six locations, killing at least eight people, according to Pakistani security officials.
Scotland’s First Minister John Swinney and Labour MP Stella Creasy said they were “deeply” concerned by the escalation in violence while former Tory minister Lord Ahmad warned the “potential for war tonight is real”.
The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office updated its travel advice for the region, warning against all travel within 10 kilometres of the India-Pakistan border, 10 miles of the Line of Control and the Balochistan province of Pakistan.

Pakistan informs security council of what it calls ‘blatant aggression’
The Pakistani foreign ministry has said in a statement that it has informed the UN Security Council regarding the “blatant aggression by India and the threat it posed to international peace and security”.
“UNSC has been informed that Pakistan reserves the right to respond appropriately to this aggression at a time and place of its choosing, in accordance with its right to self-defence as enshrined in Article 51 of the United Nations Charter,” the ministry adds, according to the BBC.

Schools closed in Punjab province, hospitals on high alert
The chief minister of the Punjab province in Pakistan ordered schools to stay closed on Wednesday and for hospitals to remain on alert.
The Pakistani military has said that six of the eight people killed in strikes by India died in attacks on Ahmadpur East and Muridke in Punjab province.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif said on X that she had issued emergency response orders. She called on rescue teams and district administration to also remain on alert.
While she said Pakistan wants peace, she said the country would become “a legion” if war came their way.
“India started it, we’ll finish it,” she said on X. She said the whole country stands with the armed forces.

United Arab Emirates urges ‘restraint’
The United Arab Emirates has urged India and Pakistan “to exercise restraint, de-escalate tensions, and avoid further escalation that could threaten regional and international peace,” according to a statement from the Deputy Prime Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
The statement went on to say that “His Highness reaffirmed that diplomacy and dialogue remain the most effective means of peacefully resolving crises, and achieving the shared aspirations of nations for peace, stability, and prosperity.”

Indian army says three civilians dead following Pakistani military action
The Indian army has said that three Indian civilians have been killed following military action by Pakistani troops in Indian-administered Kashmir, according to Reuters and the AFP news agency.
The Indian army said that the civilians were killed in Pakistani shelling and that the Pakistani military “resorted to arbitrary firing” across the de facto border that divides disputed Kashmir between India and Pakistan, the AP noted.
“Indian Army are responding in proportionate manner,” the statement said, CNN reported.
