Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom enjoy a stroll through the picturesque streets of Amalfi, Italy

This is no ordinary break-up – and no ordinary summer holiday, either. You generally expect separating couples to avoid each other once the split has happened, but Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom – who slipped out their separation announcement as quietly as possible on the eve of America’s Fourth of July holiday – are still spending time with each other and their four-year-old daughter Daisy Dove.

Forget Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin’s wholemeal, po-faced ‘conscious uncoupling’ – this is a White Lotus-style split for the super-rich, with multiple staff and delightfully wealthy friends on hand to smooth any bumps along the way.

For, despite the fact the couple actually called time on their relationship in early June, they have decided to go ahead with their long-laid plans for a summer holiday in Italy with family and friends.

There were reports that Perry and Bloom had crashed the Sanchez-Bezos Mediterranean honeymoon, but that’s not true.

Instead, just-married Lauren Sanchez and her husband, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, joined the ex-couple briefly for a lunch on a yacht off Italy’s Amalfi Coast. Sanchez is thought to have helicoptered in from their mega-yacht, the Koru, which is currently off the coast of Croatia. Sanchez posted an Instagram story of herself at the controls of a helicopter, captioned: ‘So happy to be flying.’

Others on the holiday seem to include Bloom’s son Flynn, 14, whose mother is Australian model Miranda Kerr; Bloom’s sister Samantha; and his manager Aleen Keshishian.

They decided to stick with the holiday plan even after deciding to call it quits on their love affair. Indeed, they had already split by the time Bloom visited Perry in Australia with their daughter last month.

It is indicated that although Perry felt ‘raw’ and was tearful a few weeks ago, they are doing their best to get through the separation in a civilised way.

Sources say that in May, when the holiday was being planned, it was obvious that things were very bad between them and that this trip was likely to be a break-up holiday.

Things had been ‘dire’ since April, I’m told, when Perry was among the all-female crew to take a space ‘flight’ on the Blue Origin.

Although Pirates of the Caribbean star Bloom seemed supportive, bringing Daisy along to witness her mother’s historic moment, they were on shaky ground as a couple.

A few days later, when Perry headed off on her Lifetimes tour, the relationship was ‘essentially over’ but the pair had not yet agreed to part and were still unsure of what their new lives would look like on a practical level.

Perry was also emotionally wounded after she was trolled over the space flight, writing on social media: ‘Please know I am OK, I have done a lot [of] work around knowing who I am, what is real and what is important to me.’

She added: ‘When the “online” world tries to make me a human Piñata, I take it with grace and send them love, cause I know so many people are hurting in so many ways and the internet is very much so a dumping ground for unhinged and unhealed.’

The singer, whose hits include Roar, Firework and I Kissed A Girl, has just started a world tour, which will run until December and take in the US, Canada, South America, Europe and the United Arab Emirates.

Amid her domestic drama, Perry appeared to be taking comfort from the adoration of her fans. She told them she was looking forward to ‘seeing your faces every night, singing in unison, reading your notes, feeling your warmth’.

By mid-June, she had taken off her distinctive engagement ring and a video surfaced of her bursting into tears on stage while talking about a break-up song.

Bloom, of course, attended the Bezos wedding on his own at the end of June and, on Thursday last week, the couple released a statement. ‘Due to the abundance of recent interest and conversation surrounding Orlando Bloom and Katy Perry’s relationship, representatives have confirmed that Orlando and Katy have been shifting their relationship over the past many months to focus on co-parenting.

‘They will continue to be seen together as a family, as their shared priority is — and always will be — raising their daughter with love, stability and mutual respect.’

Perry first met Bloom at a Golden Globes afterparty in 2016. The pop superstar explained: ‘I met my boyfriend over In-N-Out [a brand of American fast food]. We were at the Golden Globes and we weren’t together,’ she said. ‘So I had my security guard grab ten In-N-Outs and all of a sudden I see my boyfriend’s hand — he wasn’t even sitting at our table — he just swoops in and he grabs it and I was like, “Hey, that’s my burger!”’

He quickly introduced her to son Flynn, who was then five, and took Perry to his manager’s birthday party.

The couple made their relationship Instagram official on May 19, 2016, after attending the Cannes Film Festival, but it wasn’t without bumps in the road. Though they spent Thanksgiving that November with Perry’s parents, Keith and Mary Hudson, they broke up in February of the following year, with a representative saying they were ‘taking loving respectful space at this time’.

The problem was that Bloom had been through something called the Hoffman process – a highly intense and controversial form of therapy – and emerged feeling that Perry did not share his commitment to the relationship.

During an appearance on the Call Her Daddy podcast later, Perry said he returned from a one week retreat at the Hoffman Institute and told her he was ‘done playing this cat-mouse game’. Only after she went on her own retreat at the institute did ‘everything [start] changing’ – and the pair reunited.

They took a trip to Prague in February of 2018 and got engaged on Valentines Day. ‘It was very sweet,’ Perry told US chat show host Jimmy Kimmel. ‘It was Valentine’s Day… we went to dinner and I thought we were going to go see some art after dinner but we pulled up to a helicopter.’

She continued: ‘We landed on a rooftop [in Los Angeles] — my whole family was there, and all my friends. He did so well.’

Moving into Perry’s ‘more private’ house in March 2019, they seemed to settle into committed coupledom, and the following March, announced that they were expecting a baby. The plan was to have a wedding for 150 people in Japan before the baby was born – but Covid intervened.

A source at the time said: ‘Katy was actually really excited about walking down the aisle pregnant. They were both so elated that all the wedding details were finally coming together, but they are hitting pause because of coronavirus.’

On August 27, 2020, Perry and Bloom announced their daughter’s birth via Unicef, a charity that they are both Goodwill Global Ambassadors for. ‘We are floating with love and wonder from the safe and healthy arrival of our daughter,’ the post read. They also pointed out that they were blessed with a ‘peaceful birth’ and asked fans to donate to UNICEF so that ‘every expecting mother has access to a trained health worker and access to quality healthcare’.

Perry said later: ‘I found everything I was ever searching for when I became a mother. So grateful for that profound, deep love and honored to join the mama club.’ She later said: ‘Daisy is great. She is a combination of both me and her father, we are fearless with lots of chutzpah and just big characters. So the combination of us both is definitely coming out.’

In 2022 there was talk that the couple were ‘trying to work out’ a new venue for the wedding. Every couple of months it’s like ‘new variant’!’ she complained.

But there never was a reschedule and never another baby, although Perry said she wanted one. They kept on supporting each other, including taking a three-month sober pact to support Bloom’s busy schedule while filming in London last year. Perry said that they had relationship therapy too.

In the end, it wasn’t enough to keep them together. Many blame their diverging and busy careers.

Bloom said on a podcast: ‘I fell in love with Katheryn, this girl from Santa Barbara. And by the way, parents, pastors, living on food stamps,’ he said. ‘We’re not talking glamorous, Montecito.

‘Because we’ve got these two giant careers and lives, and hers is even, you know… it’s like a universe sometimes,’ he said. ‘But I think I just keep coming back to her and trying to hold her hand and walk her back to the sand pit and be like… we’re just gonna build a sandcastle.’

It was perhaps not the most considered of metaphors. Yet even if the castle of sand has now collapsed, you have to admire the couple’s ability to keep it as amicable – and super-luxe – as they possibly can for their daughter.
