Eion Sweeney, 32, from the north Irish town of Clonmany, was walking along Elizabeth Street in Surry Hills around 12.15am Sunday when an emergency vehicle on its way to an urgent call struck him at an intersection.

He suffered serious head injuries and was rushed to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in a critical condition.

Mr Sweeney remains critical but stable, with his family now arranging to fly from Ireland to be by his side.

A candlelit vigil was held in Clonmany on Sunday night as locals rallied to support the family.

‘Thank you to everyone who joined our candlelight vigil this evening,’ Facebook group Clonmany Together wrote.

‘Can we please for for prayers for Eion Sweeney from Ballyliffin who was in an accident in Australia.’

A friend has launched a GoFundMe to help the family as they grapple with his long road to recovery.

‘Our very well-known and loved friend Eoin Sweeney from Clonmany, was in an accident on Saturday night and his family are currently on their way here to Sydney, Australia to be by his side for recovery,’ the GoFundMe read.

‘He is currently in an induced coma in Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and we are hoping to raise funds to help with all medical expenses and aftercare. Thank you all in advance for all your help.’

Social media posts suggest Mr Sweeney moved to Australia around late 2019.

After the collision, police set up a crime scene and launched an investigation into the incident.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the crash or anyone with information to come forward.
