Creature Commandos actor Alan Tudyk insists the first series in the new-look DC Universe will be worth the wait as he praises DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn’s vision for the upcoming Max show.
Speaking during a recent appearance at Megacon Orlando, Tudyk expressed excitement about playing Doctor Phosphorus in Creature Commandos, which will launch Chapter One: Gods and Monsters following Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Studios takeover. According to Tudyk, he was intrigued by what he saw in the script for Creature Commandos and grew eager to feature on the DCU show.
Anya Chalotra Is Circe in Creature Commandos, and Is Perfect for James Gunn’s DCU
Wonder Woman’s Circe will debut in Creature Commandos, with The Witcher’s Anya Chalotra being the perfect casting choice for the bewitching villain.
“I look at the one sheet, and it’s like ‘Frankenstein’s in there. And some chick with her…like…she’s got a fish head, she’s got water on her head’ and I’m like, ‘Where do all of these…Weasel…how do they fit together? This is…this looks bad, maybe?‘ And then I’m like a guy who looks a lot like Ghost Rider, but it’s not, it’s Doctor Phosphorous, it’s DC, a whole different thing, and it’s the best thing I’ve read,” he said.
Tudyk, known for recent roles in Deadpool 2, Frozen II and Wish, offered nothing but high marks to Gunn for conceptualizing Creature Commandos, praising his penchant for creating strong camaraderie during filming and developing interesting characters. “It’s so so good. It’s what James does very well. Where he brings people together, like Guardians of the Galaxy. Where you’re like ‘How do a raccoon and a- what the hell? Who are all these people?’ And, then they’re just the best group. So yeah I’m looking forward [to] when you see that,” he said.
Creature Commandos: David Harbour Opens Up on Playing Eric Frankenstein
Creature Commandos star David Harbour delves into playing Eric Frankenstein, one of the eponymous characters.
Creature Commandos centers around the titular DC Comics team of military superhumans and black ops monsters assembled by Amanda Waller. The group is led by Frank Grillo’s Rick Flag Sr., the father of the Suicide Squad’s Rick Flag Jr., with Tudyk’s character being a member of the group who is permanently radioactive. The group also boasts the likes of David Harbour’s Eric Frankenstein, Sean Gunn’s G.I. Robot and Weasel, Zoë Chao’s Nina Mazursky and Indira Varma’s Bride of Frankenstein. Tudyk was one of several casting confirmations for Creature Commandos last April.
Creature Commandos Kicks Off the DCU
James Gunn wrote and created Creature Commandos, with the series set to premiere this fall, as confirmed by his brother, Sean. Creature Commandos will feature an edgy tone, with Grillo recently teasing the “hard R” nature of the series. The series is the first of five DCU shows that will hit Max during Chapter One: Gods and Monsters.
Gunn has expressed his confidence that Creature Commandos will defy fan expectations as it nears its debut. Creature Commandos precedes the first film release under the DCU umbrella, Superman, which hits theaters on Jul. 11, 2025.
Creature Commandos will be available to stream on Max this fall.
