A commuter has blasted ‘rude and ignorant’ passengers over their behaviours on public transport – including talking loudly on the phone or watching movies without headphones.
The man was travelling between Melbourne and Sydney when he noticed an alarming number of ‘grown’ men and women showing a lack of social awareness.
He took particular issue with ‘noisy’ commuters for not respecting their surroundings, whether on a train or bus, while others were blocking the exit doors, preventing passengers from getting on or off.
‘I am convinced that it’s become widely acceptable to be completely ignorant and rude on public transport,’ the man said in a Reddit thread.
‘Conversations at full volume, people taking calls on loudspeaker, watching TikTok videos without headphones. Not to mention people barging through train doors while others are getting off.
‘I’m not talking about teenagers either. I’m talking about grown men and women completely ignoring those around them.
‘Asking this AS an Australian… is it getting worse or am I just getting grumpier?’
His rant was met with more than 130 comments – with many agreeing they have noticed the behaviours on public transport were getting increasingly worse.

‘This isn’t even the worst of it, I ride the last train home a lot since I work late and I observe the worst of it. Twice I have seen drunks p***ing inside the carriage,’ one revealed.
‘It’s gotten way worse. As for the train/tram doors, I just say “excuse me” and walk out anyway. I ain’t waiting for people to enter, don’t care if you are old, a family with kids or what. Stand to either side of the doors. It’s not hard,’ one shared.
‘This obnoxious behaviour is absolutely getting worse and worse. Obnoxious, ignorant, and self-centred behaviour is rampant here in Sydney, and it’s the bane of my existence,’ another said.
‘A few months back I had three adults step over my pram that my four-month-old twins were in to get off the ferry before me. The gates hadn’t even properly opened yet when this started so no one could even go anywhere. These were grown adults too. I couldn’t believe it,’ one mum explained.
‘I was grateful for the lovely grandma that stopped and helped me off. She literally stopped people from walking further before I had gotten onto the ramp and then helped me push the pram until we were out of the gate.’
But the problem doesn’t just occur on public transport.
‘I was in a doctor’s waiting room last week and one old guy was sitting with his phone at full volume watching some sort of reality show. People either have no awareness of others around them or they simply don’t care,’ one said.
‘I only take my kids to the movies as I can expect and accept there will be noise. I cannot stand the people who go to movies and talk, like STFU (shut the f*** up) no one cares,’ another revealed.
‘I almost lost it the other week when I was watching a really heartbreakingly sad scene in the cinema of a boy losing his mother and this idiot behind me is LAUGHING loudly and obnoxiously throughout it all. I told him to stop several times and was ignored,’ one shared.
‘I work in a hair salon that has a very relaxing vibe, it’s very quiet, guests get a neck and shoulder massage with scented oils. But every now and again we have a client who will play videos on their phone or even games with sound absolutely cranking. Like dude, read the room?’ another added.
