Jujutsu Kaisen: Did Todo Aoi Lose His Cursed Technique?

Summary

  • Todo Aoi lost his hand in Shibuya, affecting the use of his cursed technique, Boogie Woogie. However, it may still be usable even without his missing hand.
  • Todo could potentially activate Boogie Woogie by clapping with someone else’s hand or by clapping other parts of his body.
  • Even if his cursed technique is lost, Todo’s physical prowess and tactical knowledge make him a formidable sorcerer in line with, or even stronger than, Itadori Yuji.

Jujutsu Kaisen‘s Shibuya arc was harrowing for many fan-favorite sorcerers, with hardly anyone escaping the incident unscathed. The climax of the series’ second season didn’t hold back any blows, with battle after battle elapsing, keeping everyone on the edge of their seats the entire time. Many strong sorcerers met their defeat in this arc, and those who survived escaped were maimed with catastrophic injuries.

Kyoto High’s Todo Aoi was no stranger to the disaster of the Shibuya incident and certainly fell victim to its tragedy. In a fight to the death with the special grade cursed spirit Mahito, Todo was touched by the curse’s Idle Transfiguration. Instead of allowing himself to transform into a monster that Itadori would inevitably have to kill, Todo cut off the hand that Mahito had touched without a second thought. This stopped the spread of Idle Transfiguration, but his cursed technique relies on using two hands. As such, Todo’s quick thinking could have ruined his future as a jujutsu sorcerer.

Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 Ending Explained

With plot twists and shocking reveals, some fans might need help unpacking the end of JJK’s exciting second season.

Todo Aoi is a worthy jujutsu sorcerer — the youngest to achieve the honor of a Grade 1 rank, the highest achievement among sorcerers. He was mentored by the special grade Yuki Tsukumo, and from her, he learned many physical combat skills as well as great tactical intellect, making him a force to be reckoned with. In addition, Todo has an innate technique that lends itself exceptionally well to the battlefield. Boogie Woogie allows the student to swap places with anything in his range that contains cursed energy, ranging from inanimate objects to his partners or opponents.

At the clap of his hands, Todo can swap positions of enemies, allies, or objects, making battle with him a new level of confusion. His first fight alongside Itadori highlighted the vastness of his abilities as the two ganged up on the special grade curse Hanami. Despite having more intellect than a standard curse, Hanami was still baffled by Todo’s technique and was consistently caught off guard by the duo’s consistent swapping of places. In addition to this, Itadori and his superior are very different in terms of size and cursed energy. Thus, if Hanami braced for an attack from the smaller Itadori, they would instead be hit by a more powerful attack from the boulder that is Todo — and vice versa.

Boogie Woogie allows Todo to use these advantages at will on the battlefield, adding even more depth to the technique. More than just swapping places of people or curses, Todo can clap and swap with an object. In Shibuya, he and Itadori imbued rocks with cursed energy, making them eligible for the technique’s terms. As such, they could control almost exactly where they’d end up by throwing these rocks in the direction they wanted to be in.

When Todo utilizes Boogie Woogie, the cursed technique transforms from a simple place-swapping ability into a brutal tool for battle. His tactical intellect and immense strength increase the ability and success of this technique, but at the end of the day, without the ability to clap, it could be rendered entirely useless. As such, now that Todo is down a limb, Boogie Woogie’s success and existence are being questioned.

Todo Used Mahito’s Hand To Activate Boogie Woogie

Does Nobara Die in Jujutsu Kaisen?

Nobara’s fate continues to be one of Jujutsu Kaisen’s most debated topics in the fandom, and the anime adaptation is only fueling the fire.

While having both his hands is ideal in activating Boogie Woogie, it does not necessarily have to be Todo’s two hands clapping for the technique to work. In his brawl with Mahito, he was seen clapping his hand against the curses, activating Boogie Woogie despite losing his limb. As such, if Todo fights with a partner, as he is often seen doing despite being very capable of fighting alone, Boogie Woogie could possibly function as his cursed technique.

In Shibuya, Todo described his arms as accessories, stating that applause comes from the soul. This implies that, to the sorcerer, clapping is more than just the sound or action. If this is the case, then his technique could certainly live on. There are many ways to clap, including using someone else’s hand, as Todo did with Mahito, so Boogie Woogie may still live on. Todo may just have to sacrifice his stance as a lone sorcerer and work in a team.

So far, Todo has fought alongside Tokyo High’s Itadori Yuji on two occasions — once at the Goodwill event and once in Shibuya. The pair already make a momentous duo, so Todo pairing up with another sorcerer to maintain his technique wouldn’t be too obscene. Sorcerers working in pairs is also not unheard of, with younger or lower ranks always having accompaniment. In addition to this, certain sorcerers, like Mei Mei and Ui Ui, often fight together rather than alone. Curse users Nanako and Mimiko, previously associated with Geto Suguru, also fought together.

On top of using another person’s hand, if clapping is more than just the action and truly comes from the soul, Todo should be able to find a loophole through this. Clapping one hand against another part of his body, such as his chest or shoulder, could feasibly activate the technique. It would still come from the soul, as his body is just an accessory to the applause, just as it did when Todo still had both of his hands.

Todo Declared His Cursed Technique Was Dead

Jujutsu Kaisen: Black Flash, and Its Best Users, Explained

JJK’s Black Flash is one of the most difficult attacks to master in JJK, making any sorcerer that uses it a legend.

In spite of any reasoning, Todo himself stated that Boogie Woogie was dead at the end of his battle in Shibuya. As a last-ditch attempt to help his “brother” in his deathmatch, he tried to use his technique to swap Itadori and Mahito’s places. But, after slapping the bloody stub where one hand used to be with his existing one, no one moved. As such, the disheartened sorcerer realized the severity of his loss, leaving fans with damning evidence that Todo had lost his cursed technique.

While Todo may be able to clap in other ways, if the cursed technique itself has died, there’s not really any way to revive it. However, this doesn’t mean the end of Todo Aoi as a jujutsu sorcerer. Beyond his cursed technique, Todo still possesses immense levels of cursed energy and has impressive expertise at controlling this. Boogie Woogie did not carry Todo in battle by any means; it was always his intellect and strength that made his technique unstoppable. These are qualities that Todo will never lose.

As such, the sorcerer can easily remain on the battlefield after recovering from his injury. Itadori has spent the series demolishing opponents and peers with no cursed technique, relying solely on his reserve and control of cursed energy. Todo has a larger store of cursed energy and better control over it, is physically stronger than Itadori, and has considerably more combat experience. So, there’s no reason he couldn’t be a sorcerer in the same capacity as his underclassman. Itadori is a more than capable jujutsu sorcerer without any cursed technique, and now that Todo is in the same boat, he could take a page out of his best friend’s book.

Overall, even without Boogie Woogie, Todo would still be a major threat to his cursed opponents. His physical abilities and use of plain old cursed energy were more than enough to beat Megumi Fushiguro to a pulp when the pair first met — even though Megumi has the widely renowned 10 Shadows technique. He also relied almost solely on his cursed energy during Geto Suguru’s Night Parade of a Hundred Demons, bragging to Megumi that he only used his cursed technique to defeat a special grade. On top of this, Todo has the ability to land one of the rarest jujutsu moves, a Black Flash, and he demonstrated this in Shibuya. He was the one who mentored Itadori, who is now the most consecutive Black Flash record holder, and he also has the cool mind to land the lethal blow himself.

Todo Aoi fell victim to the Shibuya incident, losing his hand in a battle with the special grade curse Mahito. Seeing as he has a cursed technique that is activated by clapping his hands, the functionality of his technique, Boogie Woogie, was in question. While there may have been other ways to clap and activate Boogie Woogie, at the end of his time in Shibuya, Todo admitted that the cursed technique was no longer usable. However, the sorcerer is more than skilled enough to remain a fighter who relies on his physical prowess and tactical knowledge. He could continue as a sorcerer without a cursed technique, just like Itadori, and be just as strong as he was with Boogie Woogie.
