The original design for the dress had see-through muslin at the back

She’s known for having her clothes tailored to remove revealing necklines and sexy slits, and last night Kate Middleton sported another gown that had been altered to make it more modest for a royal engagement.

The Duchess of Cambridge stunned in a Roland Mouret off-the-shoulder, floor-length dress, originally costing £2,700, as she joined her husband Prince Wiliam at the London premiere of long-awaited Tom Cruise film Top Gun: Maverick.

However, the French designer’s original dress, which is from a past season and is currently only available to rent, featured sheer mesh panels at the back and a long zip, which were missing from Kate’s dress.

It appears the Duchess made the subtle changes to give her ensemble a more modest twist – making it classier and smarter for the red carpet.

The original version of the black, tight-fitting dress featured four sheer panels at the back, with a zip running through the centre.

Kate’s dress, however, was plain with a back made of solid material and no zip.

The rest of the dress was the same as the original – all-black with a white bandeau at the neckline, revealing Kate’s bare shoulders.

The Lamble Off-The Shoulder Gown is described as sitting ‘elegantly off-the-shoulder to flatter your décolletage’ on the Front Row website, where it is available to rent.

The description continued: ‘Cut from sculpting stretch-crepe, this elegant design is darted at the waist and hips to create a beautiful hourglass silhouette. We love the unexpected sheer mesh panel at the back.’

Kate paired the monochrome gown with an Alexander McQueen Black Velvet Crystal Embellished Box Clutch, costing £2,318.

As for shoes, she donned her Prada Black Suede Wave Cutout Pumps, which she has worn on multiple occasions in the past.

The Duchess completed the look with a brand-new pair of earrings, which were the Tsar Star Stud and Drop Earrings from Robinson Pelhamm costing £10,560.

Thes dangling earrings featured tiny diamonds and stars at both ends of a thin silver chain.

Keeping her make-up minimal, Kate wore a little black eyeliner, lashings of black mascara, blusher, and a subtle red lip. Meanwhile, her brunette locks were ironed straight.

The Duchess often rewears outfits or gets garments altered for her, making them bespoke items.

In December 2019, the mother-of-three transformed an Alessandra Rich dress before wearing it for the ‘A Berry Royal Christmas’ programme, removing a waist-high slit and a revealing keyhole opening at the neckline, before adding a wide bow to the neck of the dress to make it a fitting outfit for a royal.

Other transformations are a little less obvious, with modest alterations to garments including changes to the shape and style of the sleeves.
