It doesn’t seem like Kevin Feige considers any of Marvel’s shows created before WandaVision is officially part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Marvel fans have caught wind of a peculiar message written by Feige for the foreword of the new book Marvel Studios: The Marvel Cinematic Universe – An Official Timeline. He makes mention of Marvel stories told by “different storytellers” in the past, but with that said, Feige says that only the titles covered in the book are a part of the MCU’s “Sacred Timeline.” Notably, past Marvel shows prior to WandaVision on Disney+, such as Daredevil, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and Runaways, are not featured in the book. Only the Disney+ shows are included along with all of the Marvel Studios films, as well as the two specials Werewolf by Night and The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special.
Feige’s message stated, “On the Multiverse note, we recognize that there are stories — movies and series — that are canonical to Marvel but were created by different storytellers during different periods of Marvel’s history. The timeline presented in this book is specific to the MCU’s Sacred Timeline through Phase 4. But, as we move forward and dive deeper into the Multiverse Saga, you never know when timelines may just crash or converge (hint, hint/spoiler alert).”
Crossovers Are Still Possible Regardless
This may be Feige’s way of saying he doesn’t look at Marvel shows from the past as a part of the MCU’s main timeline, but that fans can still expect to see these worlds mesh in certain ways. This has been seen in some ways already, with Daredevil stars Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio making appearances in the MCU ahead of their upcoming series Daredevil: Born Again. Feige suggesting that the past shows are not technically the same timeline also explains certain discrepancies, such as WandaVision introducing a new Darkhold that ignored how it was previously adapted for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Runaways.

This might also be providing some more insight into how Daredevil: Born Again will treat the previous Daredevil series. While there will be some returning actors, one significant recasting has already led to speculation that Born Again is not Daredevil Season 4, but a new series in a different timeline that happens to feature variants of Charlie Cox’s Daredevil and Vincent D’Onofrio’s Kingpin. Hugh Jackman’s return as Wolverine in Deadpool 3, reprising his role from the alternate timeline that made up the X-Men film series, is another example of how other Marvel titles could still become a part of the MCU in a way.
Marvel Studios: The Marvel Cinematic Universe – An Official Timeline will be officially released on Oct. 24, 2023.
