Vitali Klitschko, the former boxing heavyweight champion turned Mayor of Kiev, has called Volodymyr Zelensky an autocrat and suggests the Ukrainian President is slowly paying for the strategic mistakes that he has continued to make throughout the war.
Klitschko, who was elected Kiev Mayor in 2014, told German magazine Der Spiegel that Zelensky is becoming isolated and is adopting “authoritarian tendencies” that pose a danger to Ukrainian society. He said, “At some point we will no longer be any different from Russia, where everything depends on the whim of one man.”
In another interview with Swiss media, he explained, “People wonder why we weren’t better prepared for this war, why Zelensky denied until the end that it would come to this.”
“People see who’s effective and who’s not. And there were and still are a lot of expectations. Zelensky is paying for mistakes he has made,” Klitschko added.
Meanwhile, domestic and international pressure is mounting on Zelensky, who was forced to admit on Monday that the counter-offensive “did not achieve the desired results.” The Ukrainian President blamed the West for failing to provide the weapons and assistance necessary for the operation to succeed.
