Lautaro Martinez is reportedly close to agreeing a new five-year deal with Inter Milan despite interest from Tottenham

The first meeting between the striker and the Serie A side had been planned for some weeks and was ‘positive’, according to Sky Sports Italia.

Martinez’s current contract runs until 2023 and the Argentine is still on the same €2.5million (£2m) per-season salary he was on when he signed from Racing in 2018.

The 25-year-old’s new contract is expected to be a five-year deal worth £5.1m per season.

After playing a pivotal role in Inter’s Serie A title win  and Argentina’s Copa America victory, Martinez has attracted the interest of Tottenham and Atletico Madrid.

Tottenham had reportedly agreed a £60m fee for the forward as head coach Nuno Espírito Santo plotted to create a deadly partnership up front with Manchester City target Harry Kane.

There was hope Spurs could see their swoop for Martinez completed but that was before the move hit complications owing to the return of Chelsea’s prodigal son Romelu Lukaku.

However, Sportsmail understands that Tottenham struck their deal with Inter for Martinez before Chelsea came in aggressively to seal their £98m club record move for Lukaku at the end of last week – a scenario that casts some doubt over Spurs’ move for the South American.

Chelsea’s signing of Lukaku, which saw him return to Stamford Bridge seven years after he first left, scuppered their London rivals’ chances of securing Martinez’s signature.

While Inter are in severe financial difficulty, the Italian club would be reluctant to lose both their main forwards.

Martinez’s partnership with Lukaku saw the pair contribute 41 goals and 20 assists to Inter’s Scudetto campaign that saw them finish above rivals AC Milan by 12 points.

The Nerazzurri ended Juventus’s vice-like grip on the Serie A to win their first title in a decade and Simone Inzaghi’s side will be looking to retain their crown this season.

Now, having made back £150 million in transfer fees, they no longer have a desperate need to sell Martinez.

Martinez’s agent Alejandro Camano looked to dampen talk of his Milan exit, telling FCInter1908.it: ‘He’s never gonna have a fight with Inter to leave the club. Never. Lautaro’s an Inter player and he’s happy in Italy.’
