Lost Boys Stars Explain Why Schumacher's Vampire Classic Still Holds Up

1987’s The Lost Boys actors Corey Feldman, Jason Newlander and Alex Winter explain why Joel Schumacher’s teen vampire film holds up 35 years later.

35 years after its release, the stars of Joel Schumacher’s The Lost Boys understand why it still holds up.

Stars Corey Feldman, Jason Newlander and Alex Winter sat down with Entertainment Weekly to reminisce about making the 1987 teen vampire horror film. Conceived initially as a Goonies-style kids’ movie to be directed by Richard Donner, the actors credit Schumacher for revamping the story into a mature but sexy horror movie that continues to leave an impression on new generations of audiences. “I think it’s the most successful interpretation of all the things [director Joel Schumacher] did well, which was fashion and music and understanding actors and story and style and — I’m just gonna call a spade a spade — homoeroticism and sexual ambiguity and sexual adventurousness,” Winter said.

“And Joel coming from fashion really did know where things were going, so he and [costume designer] Suzy Becker and [production designer] Bo Welch, they were doing things that almost didn’t make sense to the studio at that time of that summer, but by the time it came out, it was like, the thing. And he saw that coming and baked it into the movie. I just think [Joel] swung for the fences, and he connected, you know?”

Though Schumacher went forward with a dark and violent R-rated film made for teenagers, the legendary filmmaker did not let the blood-red visual style and MTV rock music get in the way of telling a simple story about family ties. “The story is rooted in family. So even though it’s a fictional story and it’s got all this crazy stuff going on, the whole base of it is about these three families and how they intertwine if you really think about it. So it’s a family film,” Feldman said. The actor goes on to say that Schumacher was very aware of this theme at all times, insisting that the emphasis on this tone is what helped create a movie that “feels naturalistic.”

Released in the summer of 1987, The Lost Boys was a success with critics and audiences, grossing $32 million on an $8.5 million budget. The film made stars of Feldman and Corey Haim who became known to the public as “The Two Coreys” and launched the careers of Jason Patric, Jami Gertz and Kiefer Sutherland. Two direct-to-video sequels followed with 2008’s Lost Boys: The Tribe and 2010’s Lost Boys: The Thirst with Feldman and Newlander reprising their roles as the Frog Brothers.

In 2016, a Lost Boys television pilot was commissioned by the CW Network. Two pilot episodes were filmed before the network decided to pass on the series in 2021. Warner Bros. is developing a Lost Boys reboot set to be written by Randy McKinnon and directed by Jonathan Entwistle.
