Ryan Gosling as Ghost Rider

Marvel’s Kevin Feige supports actor Ryan Gosling being cast as the MCU’s Spirit of Vengeance after the actor recently expressed interest in the role.

Marvel Studios head honcho Kevin Feige has expressed his support for Ryan Gosling playing Ghost Rider in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

While at 2022’s San Diego Comic-Con, Feige was told by MTV News’ Josh Horowitz that Gosling is interested in playing the Spirit of Vengeance. “Hey man, if Ryan wants to be Ghost Rider…” Feige answered before calling Gosling “unbelievable” and “amazing,” saying he’d love to find a place in the MCU for him. The actor recently put aside rumors that he’d be joining the MCU as Nova but added he’s more interested in portraying Ghost Rider. However, he has not specified whether he’d want to play Johnny Blaze or Dan Ketch’s version of the character. Additionally, when asked about who else is gunning to play the hot-headed biker, Horowitz also mentioned The Walking Dead’s Norman Reedus.

Long before Gosling entered the conversation, Reedus confirmed occasionally that there had been conversations about him playing the MCU’s Ghost Rider, but nothing concrete has materialized. Rumors about Reedus playing the character began swirling in 2018, when he first mentioned Ghost Rider as being the Marvel character he’d like to portray on-screen. Given the similarities between Johnny Blaze and Reedus’ Walking Dead character Daryl Dixon, the idea caught fire, especially after the actor started sharing pieces of fan art that depicted him as Ghost Rider.

Nicolas Cage played Ghost Rider on the big screen twice before. His first outing as Johnny Blaze was in 2007’s Ghost Rider, which did well at the box office but received scathing reviews from critics. A sequel, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, was released in 2012 but was critically panned. The next on-screen appearance of Ghost Rider came in the form of Gabriel Luna’s portrayal of Robbie Reyes on the television series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. The show provided a brief glimpse of Johnny Blaze’s Ghost Rider in the season four episode “The Good Samaritan”, which depicted Blaze sharing his curse with Reyes.

Months ago, rumors circulated that Cage would reprise his role as Johnny Blaze/Ghost Rider in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Ultimately that did not materialize, but Cage admitted he would return if asked. During an Ask Me Anything on Reddit, Cage elaborated that in order for him to return as Ghost Rider he would “really need to see what [Marvel Studios] had in mind before answering that.” After the release of Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, Marvel Studios regained the on-screen rights to the character. But whether Ghost Rider appears in any future MCU installments remains uncertain.
